Its official - 3 on the bench + 1 substitute. http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/ ... fault.aspx Good for slower players with a good fitness base like mclean I would think |

I like this change. The only issue is trying to get some fitness into the player who is the 22nd for that particular week. Do you play him for half a game and take a gamble on injury or do you play him in the VFL, if time allows? |

i dont think it will make much of a difference, if anything, becuase there are only 3 subs, the amount will go up ie less people available to be interchanged, will mean that people are actually interchanging more. how stupid are these people? 4 on in the interchance, capped interchange to 20 per quarter 1 sub (to replace an injured player only) is it that hard? see if D. Swan runs off at every 2nd minute automatically and still has the impact that he currently does? |

actually makes a big difference as it will slow the game down due to having less 'fresh' players to interchange from - means that players spend more time fatigued on field and those on the bench have less recovery time. |

Dane Swan interchanges about 4 times per quarter. Therefore, he's probably on the bench 6-9 minutes per quarter. Obviously if one player is on your bench for 6-9 minutes per quarter, there will only be 2 other spots available for rotations. The players will still require the same amount of time to recover. I cant see how it wont impact. Either less rotations or less players being rotated. |

Good change. On top of reducing the speed of the game, promoting endurance as a key attribute and increasing disposal efficiency, they give a lifeline to teams with injury woes on the day. I reckon this rule would have won us 2 or 3 games had it been installed in 2010. |

I think it's horribly unfair to Collingwood, who already have to deal with Blockbuster Fatigue and playing at that rathole the MCG 21 times a year. Bloody AFL. |

I'll be interested to see that path clubs take with the sub. Do you pick your next best player? Do you go with a utility type who can play anywhere if needs be? For example, for us, do you perhaps keep Walker back as the sub, given that he can, in theory, deputise in any part of the ground? Or would you just have the next bloke on the list - say, Scotland - and shuffle the players on the ground. Do you keep it in your pocket until late in the game in case of injury? Or do you immediately drag a bloke who is having a stinker? |

Is the sub even eligible without an injury or suspected injury is perhaps the best question you should ask. That's not been clarified. |

Wonder what the rules will be in how late you can swap them ie can teams play funny buggers and name a player as a sub then put them into the team on game day. |

They were saying on SEN earlier today that you can do what you like..but once they are out, they are out. Saying to expect every team to change 20 mins into 3rd q. |

Does the AFL require a doctor's certificate if clubs claim a player is injured so they can sub him off? |

The sub can be used at any time for any reason, so there is no real exploitation available. |

..it won't impact the number of rotations as much, as you'll find alot more mids resting up fwd, and instead of hff's you'll have teams taking an extra mid and play them as a shuffling mid thru middle/hff..a bit like how the AA teams often stick an extra mid across the hff.. ..it may bring only one specialist FP into the team, instead of 2fp's like some go with.. ..if you havent got a very productive fp, you might rotate an extra mid thru there etc etc.. ..players that can run longer, like McLean, Ball etc etc may benefit.. ..also, the game's tempo may be even more controlled.. ..teams may pace themselves thru a certain amount of time in a 1/4, and then maybe have a 7min high intensity burst.. ..the game will evolve.. ..i think it's needed for those genuine injury times.. ..but i doubt you'll see many games where a substitution isn't made. |

The second ruckman being just a specialised ruckman will become redundant with this rule. With only 3 blokes on the interchange bench you could not go into a game with a Warnock/Jacobs combination. The relief ruckman will now have to play a significant role somewhere else on the ground. I believe the rule will force our hand on Kruezer becoming a forward and pinch hitting in the ruck. At this stage I don't see Warnock, Hampson or Jacobs capable of making a consistent significant contribution in any other position on the ground other than ruckman. |

We could be advantaged here b/c our ruckmen can also run, particularly Special K & Hampson. And Warnock can also play forward. Our no.1 combination would be hard to beat: Warnock/Kreuzer. If Freo can get Mitch Clark from Brisbane, they would probably be up there with us (Sandi ahead of Warnock; Kreuzer ahead of Clark..). Also teams will struggle to contain the matchwinners with big tanks. They will struggle to curtail Judd or at least might have to choose b/w rotating on Judd and rotating the rest of their midfield. We're going to have to work hard on the fitness of Yarran, Robinson, Gibbs. |
