How appropriate and predictable that the victim was St.Kilda.

131 years ago in 1879.
The Australasian newspaper gave a mid season report on the clubs, it said;
"I suppose Melbourne, Carlton, and Hotham will occupy the first rank, West Melbourne, Essendon*, Albert-park, and South Melbourne the second; and St.Kilda, as usual, make a graceful last."


Was this award given to each player, or is this the only one, and does the club have this trophy?

Interesting that only Mil Hannah went on to make anything of himself at senior level. Shane Robertson was the next best. Makes a mockery of the theory that the U19s would become the twos and then the ones...

I'm surprised I didn't see that game as I used to go pretty well every week with my dad to PP and watch the games, all three of them. Sometimes we missed the U19's and just watched the twos and ones. Those were the days.

Geez, I always thought the Under 19's played at the away ground to the seconds and the seniors.
I don't recall seeing hardly any U19 matches, except for one at Princes Park. For some reason it was the curtain raiser, and remember Mil Hanna as this premature balding bloke with a streaky bit of long hair. The next year he was in the seconds or the firsts and I coudn't believe how his physique had changed in the 6 months or so.

I'm pretty sure that Michael Kennedy played in the '87 premiership team and played about 75-odd senior games

So 3 premiership players in that team isn't too bad.

Ian Sartori, Ashley Matthews and Simon Minton-Connell were traded for Diesel.

Warren McKenzie was traded for pick #2 in the 1990 draft. We drafted James Cook with that pick.

I forget the circumstances of Michael Kennedy going to Sydney. We may have de-listed him and Sydney subsequently drafted him.

Anyway, its an injustice to Shane Robertson and Michael Kennedy to say only Mil Hanna achieved anything. They don't hand out places in premiership sides.

He was some kick for goal and you always felt confident when he was going back for a shot. Eventually another country boy from Harsham took over as leading V.F.L. goalkicker (there was no A.F.L. then)

Yep,ya just new he'd put it it through when having a shot.As reliable shot for goal as Plugger.The thing that sticks in my mind most about "Turkey" Tom was he always wore long sleeves as did another of my favourites Cliffy Stewart.

As a very young kid, I saw him kick a goal against Richmond that has stayed in my memory. He had a set shot on the boundary line about 40 metres out in the pocket that was to house the future Social Club.
It was a torpedo that curled along the boundary line, then straightened enough to go through the big sticks. Amazing !!

PS. A workmate of mine, a North Melb. premiership player, and product of Ganmain, has told me of some of Turkey Tom's feats in the local comp. Even now he's in awe of TT.

A legend in the Riverina, to this day.

Yeah part of the Turkey Tom legend is that one of his many brothers was a Bishop and another one was Dennis Carroll IIRC was a not bad footballer with South. He put Ganmain or was it Grong Grong Matong on the map and there was another one or two V.F.L. identities from around there a bit later. He played with the likes of Nicholls, Silvagni and James, coached by Ken Hands. Saw what great country it is around there while working at Ardlethan tin mine in the days when you could ride a train from Cootamundra to Hillston.
