With the happenings @ Bomber land this morning looks like the race to the 17th Flag is well and truly on. We now have 2 favourite sons coaching their respective clubs to try and get to that 17th flag. Time will tell who gets there first. The Bombers are putting together a "super coaching panel" while we are decimated in that department. Does this put us on the back foot? James Hird is my all time favourite player who never played for Carlton. As much as I would love to see him do well, I can't accept them winning the 17th before us. |

Do you think SOS will answer a cavalry call now? Who else would you like to see? |

Collingwood is the biggest threat of beating us to 17 at the moment. |

Love to see SOS back @ the club but I doubt it will happen. I think we had a semi-super coaching panel in the Pagan Days. But the mismanagment in those days probably saw us loose them to other clubs. John Worsfold, Ross Lyon, and SOS himself !!! ![]() ![]() |

Hird is a priviledged tool Essendon* is a bogan organisation dressed up as middle class Having said that, if they get any combination of Hird/Thompson/Williams/Laidley and we've got Johnny Barker to hang our hats on, we are a B grade amateur outfit. Must land two big fish in this coaching reshuffle. |

We need Paul Roos as Director of Coaching. 1.5 mill a season should make that happen. |

Can remember the nerves I had leading into the 2001 GF where Essendon* had a shot at their 17th flag...hardly got any sleep the night before I was that uncomfortable with the idea of them being ahead of us. A couple of good pickups and we're not that far off it. Although anything can happen. |

I must admit, after having just watched the James Hird Press conference, he was very impressive. I realise that he is media savvy, but the way in which he spoke would convince me, if I were an Essendon* supporter, to want to get on board. As a player i think he would inspire as well. On face value he has made a good start. |

How about we stop worrying what other clubs are doing. Ratten is a Premiership player and Best and Fairest winner in a Premiership year. Not too many Brownlow medalists make good coaches - I can only think of Blight. Assistants come and go Swann is the best in the game he built what Collingwood has today. He wouldn't be with us if he didn't think we were making the right moves. Again our players need more experience and some need a little more dedication. |

I know it's beside the point, but Dick Reynolds Captain-coached 4 premierships |

Hird is a flog! He's trotted out the stock standard crap from the PR departments handbook. As I've said in other threads, there aren't many TRUE club legends that have gone on to achieve a premiership with the club they dominated at like Golden Boy did at the Scummers. Just for the record - I put Ratten in this basket too. I believe that passion gets in the way of logic. When you have a coach that is too emotionally attached to the history of the club they allow certain things to happen and refuse to let in good advice from outside. They'll sell heaps of memberships but they'll fail dismally on the field. Bombers for the spoon in 2011/12/13 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

They'll probably start off ok enough and Robbo/Rohan/Sheahan/Caro et al will be pumping their tyres big time but then the novelty of playing for the new coach will wear off and they'll go back to being shithouse. Daresay they will get a soft draw as well and any MRP findings against them will be little more than a slap on the wrist. If we don't flog them both times next year though... ![]() |

Good luck to Hird. I love him. ![]() But if Mark Thompson takes the Essendon* job I will loose all respect for him. Honestly, that's a dog act if he leaves Geelong for the Bombers. 'Burnt Out'. pffft............. spare me! ![]() |

For a second there, I thought this thread was about Richmond's race to 17th next year. |
