just thinking.....with ratts to come out of contract at end of 2011.....the same year that malthouse finishes coaching at collingwood....and with the friendship that Swann and malthouse scontinue to have. ...whether he may be option if ratts were to have a bad year next year....I am sure malthouse may want to beat bucks in the coaches box...

Won't happen.
Malthouse looks to be easing his way into a bit of media work at the moment so he can get stuck into it when he goes out of coaching completely. As for Roos, it's been said a million times...

With Swan one should also read Malthouse.

Pratt family will simply inform Eddie, like they did with Swan.

Not sure that we want him, would love to see David Parkin back as Chairman of Selectors.

Why wouldn't we want him? Too over qualified?

i think malthouse is an exceptional coach - you don't coach for as long as he has if you are not!

that said Malthouse's history also shows he recruits certain types and plays a certain way and it takes years for him to craft a team. those expecting him to come to the blues and deliver instant success are dreaming. he would need up to 5 years and basically I think he is too old to put in another 5 yr stint

i think he will finish off his coaching at the pies

Good post. Malthouse is a great coach. Not many coaches have taken an average team to the top in year one, and doubt he could last for the long haul.

But if he wants to add further to his legacy he can come to Carlton and do what he loves doing, get the Pratts to cover his breach of contract, work with Swann to bring in more top staff, develop a strong culture through the club and get Carlton playing team-oriented football.

If the club is smart enough to create the right environment and plan for Mick's strengths as a leader, and he wants to do it, 2 years might be enough to make Carlton a respected club again.

100/1 against, but I'd like to see it.

Ratts might get us there, but I haven't seen him imprint a strong ethos at Carlton yet. He will come under pressure if we can't improve significantly next year. I hope Swann etc don't let him overpay for older players again this off-season. We need to improve the list, but he needs to show he can get this group playing consistent, hard football.

They've now played in three GFs in 10 years, two of them they made with an average side. He has a very imposing record.

Wrong!! He got the Pies into their first GF under him after 3 years with a very average list. Imagine what he'd do with our list!!

That is the problem with Carlton supporters who most under rate Collingwood's side, Collingwood have a team of champions. I backed Collingwood to win the premiership before the start of the season and most people laughed at me. Go from their back line to forward line and they are very good players and who don't make many mistakes. Look at the players who are on the bench and some in the VFL team. They would be in any other teams starting 18.

Buckley was running around the team that made two GFs. He was far from average.

Perhaps that's the point. They did recruit well when they bottomed out but most of their side weren't amazing to begin with. They have been coached well to get to this stage. Ergo, he has done a very good job.
As an aside, eddie's claim that if he was to leave colonwood after his tenure as coach and breaking his 'contract', it seems to me a possibility of restraint of trade if he wanted to coach somewhere else. I know a contract is binding but it was signed two or three years ahead of him leaving. Not a great position for malthouse unless he has no desire to coach again.
