oh please God be true!

Wasnt he a part time assistant a few years ago during the Pago years? Right before his entire world went Super Nova?

I think Nathan Bassett should be looked at as a possible defensive/development coach. He has completely transformed Norwood in the SANFL this year. Under his guidance, the Redlegs have blooded several young players who have stood up and become consistent performers. He has also managed to get the best out of his senior players (former Bullant Brett Zorzi is currently playing the best football of his career, and is a chance of winning the Magarey Medal). Norwood last year were a rabble, but this year they are the best defensive unit in the SANFL, having conceded the least points by a considerable margin. I never liked Bassett much as a player, but I have been very impressed with the way he has been able to turn Norwood around, and would not be at all disappointed to hear his name being mentioned as a possibility.

Yep. Can't think of a better choice to get the backline into gear.

Peter Dean is at the Doggies yeah? Will he be available in 2011 or is he still contracted there?

Re Brittain, I doubt it will happen BUT I would support it.
I think he was very hardly judged at a difficult time on-field re injuries + politically re Elliot.
Plus he was dealing with the end of a strong on-field era with the associated personalities plus Fev!

He clearly has a great understanding of the game and is reportedly a great people manager. He was at the top of our coaching chain (alongside Parkin) when both Worsfold and Lyon learnt their chops at Carlton.

Having said that, I would also be v happy with Laidley, Peter Dean & a good young'n.

Interesting moves. That's a fair portion of the coaching panel gone. Does that mean we got it wrong in the first place? Do they carry the can for our poor second half of the season? Did Ratts pick them, were they foisted on him, did he sack them or was it a committee or Icke/ Swann decision? I was never happy with the Lappo appointment. No experience, just seemed too much like jobs for the boys, but did we learn from this? Do the people who appointed him reflect on why they appointed him and why he wasn't the success they hoped for? Not sure if that is something Carlton does well. I am a little surprised at Monty going. I thought he was being touted as a possible senior coach and was picked from outside the club presumably because he presented really well. I think we come up against Ratts inexperience again, the only experienced assistant we had was Riley because Ratts just didn't know any experienced coaches well enough to know he could work with them, beacuse he had had so little experience in AFL coaching.

I hope these were Ratts decisions and not made at a corporate level. I don't think Ratts is going to take us to a flag, but he has got a pass mark so far and 2011 will show if we are going ahead or marking time. But if he is having assistant appointments and sackings done above his head he is on a hiding to nothing. You get the absolute best coach available after exhaustively judging the field (we didn't do that) then you absolutely back that coach and absolutely trust his appointments. If he proves not to be up to it, you move him on.

Ratts needs to be absolutely free to create his own team, or 2011 will be compromised.

Roos, Williams and Malthouse as the 3 assistants to replace.

I like the thoughts of David king on footy to be honest *ducks for cover*

3 years is about the usual time for a line coach to be at any one club. Id suggest Lappin and Montgomery would have been well aware of this.
Time for some fresh messages.

Both are well respected for the knowledge of the game so i doubt either will have a problem getting a gig elsewhere.

I am looking forward to some fresh idea's being thrown at the players. The more they learn now the better equiped they will be in a year or two when they peak.

I wish all three well. Matty Lappins longterm contribution to the club has been immense and should be noted.

I hope the replacements are good and can get the playing group to take the last steps they need to make to be a real force in the competition.

Re David King, not for mine.
I reckon he shows a great lack of insight in his comments. Reminds me a bit of Tony Shaw except that Tony Shaw occasionally gets it right, even if it is not for the reasons he thought....

PS> Am smiling as I remember a Carl v North match late in Braddles career. King went to Braddles who was on Half Back Flank before the first bounce. Braddles then just starts running laps of the centre square before the bounce with poor old King trying to keep up. Hysterical.

Braddles did some funny shit.

Remember that game at the Docklands (against St Kilda I think?) where he went to mark the ball 70m out from goal, and figured he was too far out to score, so instead of cleanly marking it (he was on his own) he tapped the ball in the air towards goals three or more times, running closer to goal all the while, until he finally grabbed it with both hands.

Bloody spoilsport umpire deemed he was in control of the ball from the first touch (fair enough i guess) so he was taken back to the 70m mark.

Was hilarious to watch though. Cheeky bugger.

The strategy should be to poach the best assistants from strong clubs who have been successfully coached and have successfully developed players, assistant coaches who both Ratts and the players can learn from not blokes fresh out of playing (ie Harvey, Lappin etc) who are getting their first foot in the door.

We should be looking for assistants from Geel, Sydney, Collingwood with some experience, that will genuinely help us. I also think the other Scott brother would be great having heard him speak.

I remember that game - you are spot on, was against St Kilda in 2001 when they wore their pura milk outfit. It was great thinking - shame the umpire didn't reward him for his initiative.
