Blues poach highly rated Dogs assistant as right-hand man to Voss

By Jake Niall

Carlton have poached Ashley Hansen, who had been slated to be Luke Beveridge’s senior assistant, to hold the same role under new senior coach Michael Voss.

Hansen, who has been a fixture at the Bulldogs in Beveridge’s time at the helm and had been promoted to senior assistant following the exit of Steven King to Gold Coast, will coach the forwards and act as Voss’ senior lieutenant in a revamped coaching panel.

Lieutenant.

Senior Assistant

I though there was no talent to poach and no one wanted to go near Carlton.

We are picking and choosing on a needs basis.

Good stuff. I like the Senior Assistants. Good help on Game Day.

Hansen would know what Dogs coaches did in the last quarter against us, in a game we controlled for 3/4's, only to spin the game on its head in one last quarter this year to demolsih us.

What happened...maybe the answer is don't worry, the reason is gone now.

I don't think there's any more room for thse guys now.

Its been a complete clean out in the coaches ranks. Power and Okeefe remain.

Seems like a deeper list we have than last year. Players will love the one on one coaching

I appreciate the kudos but I don't know much about assistant Coaches.

But what I will say looking at it logically................

Each person
Voss
Hansen
Clarke
Hamill
Power

Have all have been involved in successful Clubs as players. They know what it takes to be winners. They all come with credibility.

Voss
Hansen
Power
Are premiership players

Hamill was at Carlton in 1995
Clarke was at Hawthorn in 2008 when they won the GF.

Voss under Hinkley for 7 years knows what it takes to grind out a successful season.
Hansen at Footscray in 2021.

The tutuledge they have all had in their careers is some of the very best in the AFL. Parkin, Matthews, Clarkson, Lyon, Hinkley, Beveridge, Worsfold.

That's some schooling, from the very best and they all have a vast amount of experience as assistants at various AFL clubs.

Voss said he wanted a good cross section and I think he has it in spades. They are all under 50 and I presume hungry for success as Coaches. Voss at 46 and Hamill 44 the oldest.

Fingers crossed they all jell quickly and find success to to give them all some confidence.

Regards Cazzesman

It's hard not to be excited about next year, but I suspect it will take until 2023 to see a big leap up the ladder. Regardless of the recruiting both on and off field, it's going to take a while to turn this club around. Gee, I hope I'm wrong though!

The talent is all there (+ Cerra). He has 5 months to fix what's above the shoulders, which would instantly make us more competitive and for strings of games. That would put as in the 8. Being at the pointy end is what's going to take significantly more strides.

There will not be round 2's performance in the corresponding game next year. I expect that game to appear a bit later in the season along with a subsequent fallout that those types of performances are no longer tolerated.

Fair points Cazzes. I like this bit

Also Hansen coached Footscray to the 2016 VFL premiership.

I'd like it if we had someone on there fairly fresh out of the game though, plus someone known for their tactical nous.

Hansen is now confirmed on the Carlton web site.

However I feel we still needed a senior mentor to be on that panel. Ie Director of Coaching. What do you guys think?

I’d like to think there is enough overall experience there to cover all bases.

I’m sure Parkin will be a sounding board for Voss.

So it seems that's it then?

I'm sure if Vossy logged in here there'd be a few people willing to be a sounding board.

But Camel you omitted the paragraph at the end (it's called preserving optionality!) :

“We will continue making necessary adjustments to our football department throughout the off-season to ensure we continue to move forward in what has been a really exciting reset phase for the Club as we set our sights on 2022.”

I actually don't think Voss needs anyone in an official mentoring role. He has been around now. Very different to when he started out at the Lions, or Bolton or Teague.
He will have a range of people he has a relationship with that is part of his package (incl Matthews and whoever he picks up the phone to...).

Hopefully that just means that Lloyd’s goose is cooked.

Lloyd seems to be getting plenty of credit for recent changes
