I heard on the grapevine that when Big Jack got to the pearly gates, God said to him,
"Aaron Hamill is coming back to Carlton as an Assistant Coach."
And Jack said, "Over my dead body!"
And God said, "So this appointment is made in heaven and on earth."

Yet I didn't hear if Big Jack made it through the pearly gates to Heaven?

Great appointment !

I'm looking forward to Voss and Hamill (and hopefully others) adding some mongrel into our players.

I believe Vossy's word was "powerful"

Let's play with some intent and power and grunt and prick and attitude.

Sick of us being so meek and timid.

Yes if there was one thing Hamill did well it was harass and chase and basically go in hard as nails.

Hamill and Voss both very competitive, tough footballers.

The players on our list who haven't busted their gut and gone in hard won't know what's hit them.
Yep.....
Any chance Voss, Hamill and Diesel can join in the drills?? .....

I hope we step it up on the toughness factor.

Go Blues

     I mean this in the most genuine way. If Grro is happy I am ecstatic. Welcome back Aaron.

Mrs Caz is over the moon.

I'm liking the appointment of hard nut players that are now coaches.
Definitely has the smell of Diesel all over it.
I hope the boys are ready for training under these two.

Not the end of the world. Hope him all the best although only player I hated when he left.

Why is he second choice?

Scarlett not answering our calls. Hamill did

I don't have a link or whatever, but apparently he isn't answering any ones calls. Perhaps what Caro said on FC recently about him wanting to take a year off and/or time away from footy is true? Maybe Scott killed his desire? So many potential reasons. But if we did try and he didnt even bother responding then he isnt the right person for us.

He's possibly waiting for the nod to be Geelong coach at the end of next season when they go full rebuild.

Has the feel of hard nut footy with the new off field team.

I hope it rubs off.

Geez, some of us…
Every assistant appointed at other clubs is a genius;why didn’t we get him?, just shows how crap we are.
Any appointment we make is rubbish, 2nd choice, just shows how crap we are!

Bloody Rance, with zero experience is apparently the best appointment of all time; Hamill with 10 years as an assistant is no good.
Scarlett is on record saying he only ever wants to be a coach (ie assistant coach) at Geelong.

I tell you what, some of us have taken on the psychological profile of StKilda supporters from the 80s!

The club has been sourcing assistant coaches since mid year and Hamill held discussion with Brad Lloyd in June. So it's not a huge surprise.
I was hugely disappointed when he left as I loved the way he played the game but I didn't buy into the vitriol and hate. He regretted it as soon as he left so IMHO, he was hurt by the decision as much as anyone. He was a young kid who allowed himself to be manipulated by a money hungry, scumbag manager.

As for the Saints having 5 goal runs against them, we should know as well as anyone that it has little to do with your backline. It's more about midfield and forward pressure and having an overly offensive game style. Ratts has always coached a game that rewards downhill skiers. Not a lot different to Teague.

Yep, it's my understanding the club was in discussions with Hamill long before Scarlett was even considered a possibility.
I'm also wondering if a chat with Craig Lambert isn't an outrageous idea.

Lambert would be fantastic in player welfare and development. The GWS players and their families love him.
There was a lot more behind the Whitfield saga than met the eye. Lambert was the fall guy.

Not a great start with Hamill going on about the romance.

At St Kilda Hamill's forte was running around making angry faces and bumping into people.
Oddly, that's exactly what our players need to learn.

We all have different opinions and recollections of what happened here over 20 years ago.

I'm no longer concerned about that. All I want to know is what does he bring to the table as an assistant that complements Voss and Power?
What will he do to implement defensive structures that we haven't had and how will help with the development of players?
No use getting them "angry" or getting them to play "powerful" football if he can't implement proper structures and assist with bringing in a game plan to ensure success.

Yes the way they played early this year had a stench about it that speaks to cultural issues as much as anything, pretty harsh to pin it on the defensive coach.

5 goal run ons is a useless statistical anomaly that can and will occur dependant purely on momentum.

All our supporters got hoodwinked with this statistic, both grand finalists copped it in the big dance. To equate a 5 goal run on with anything meaningful is starting to draw a long bow. All it really shows, is how good a team was at scoring when they had the momentum.

except if it happens time and time and time again, then it is an issue because of an underlying issue.

If Dogs (to use your example) experienced 5 (or more) run on of goals in almost every game I doubt they would have played in the GF - but I am happy to be proved wrong. How many run-ons did Melbourne and Dogs experience compared to Carlton in 2021? The same, less or more?

Totally agree
I don't give a rats about 20 years ago (hell I would've accepted Clarko into the fold)..but I care about complementary skill sets, ideas, creativity, sustainable successful structures etc etc etc.just as much as the rah rah rah physicality

Does Hamill bring that? Got NFI

Is he spoken about by the broader AFL community in positive, glowing terms when it comes to the changes he's made at a club...it doesn't appear so

I'm personally underwhelmed by the appointment but want to be proven sooooo wrong and be saying in the next 12-36 months that it was an inspired choice

The only thing that 5 goal run ons can be attributed to is the 666 rule. If you get your midfield mix wrong during interchanges then you will concede goals in quick succession. Our lack of development in the midfield has every bit as much to do with 5 goal run ons as game plan or structures

Rubbish...we didn't get hoodwinked
We copped it two out of every 3 games under Teague. If you cannot see it is a concerning trend which is a function of the gameplan, we'll agree to disagree

Its literally a scoring trend but the closer to the top of the ladder you finish, the less frequently it occurs (as typified by the spread of teams on the ladder). Why? the more games you win, the less likely you conceded 5 goals or more in a row.

It's not really any different to scoring 2 then copping 8, or copping 3, scoring 1, copping another 3, scoring 1 again, and then copping another 2.

It might make people feel better or worse about things, but the alarming part of the 5 goal run ons, is more to do with momentum swings.

There were multiple times, that this played out, even though we executed a forward press, and didnt hit the scoreboard which meant when we didnt have the momentum we conceded, but when we did, we failed to score. To make the statistic go away (read the grand final) its more important to score when you have the momentum. Scoring when you dont can sometimes be attributed to scoring efficiency.

It literally happens in matches all the time.

If you wanted to point to a statistic, I would say the one that shows the inside 50 count is way more useful to analyse, because it shows the variance between momentum swings better. teams that have momentum wont convert all the time, but they will enter forward 50. Likewise, teams conceding momentum often will see many inside 50's against, which will tell a much better story of what is occurring in game.

Scoring is scoring. Ive seen teams win, by scoring efficiently, and their opposition failing to hit the scoreboard, and that doesnt make the win any better or worse, because all that has to change is scoring efficiency and the result changes. THATS why the 5 goal run ons are in varying degrees, useless. Its not even a statistic if you saw it play out in every final you watched, and the only tight final I saw where this didnt occur to at least one finalist, was the GWS vs Sydney match.

But I think it was the 5 goal runs PLUS the observations of keen observers in football/media of our defensive structures (all over the ground) and capabilities.
It was the latter that was the core problem; the former merely a symptom that wasn't used for other clubs because the underlying problem was not seen to be as much of an issue.
