I have a strong feeling that Bryce Gibbs is lining up constantly in defence because of the fact we just have no-one else. I think this offseason will see us try to prepare the list in a way to free up Gibbsy again for a permanent midfield role. It's actually not bad, getting him to learn the game as a defender... hopefully will take on these lessons for the future.

Zach Touhy, Rhys o'keefe, Marcus Davies, Joseph Dare or Caleb Tiller should all be busting a gut this preseason to try and grab the role that Gibbs will hopefully vacate down there.

A fit Simon White/Mark Austin or a draftee we bring in like a Matt Watson or Patrick McCarthy might also help our structure a bit more... the key is definitely foot skills... foot skills.. and more foot skills.

Has the potential to be vastly better than Simon Black but keep playing him in dumb positions - does need to learn to play for the team; little self centered sometimes.. one guy thats developing all his mental attributes as we speak.

Over head ball.

He needs a hard hat before he can go into the guts.

Nah, Keep him in the defense and keep him accountable.

How about Kane Lucas for that role across half back? Seems to have the penetrating foot skills.

Being played in defence because we need someone with his skills/decision making in the back half. Posted else where that Lloyd said that Essendon* usually targeted our defence because if you pressure them they don't have th skills to run the ball out - usually turn it over and you can score against them. Didn't work for them on Fri night (because our midfield protected the defence) but most teams have been us that way this year.

He will continue to be played there until we find someone else. Agree the Kane Lucas is a beauty and definetly a step in the right direction. But Kane alone may not be enough to release Gibbs.

Don't care where he plays as long as he gets involved.

The last 2 months of crap (last night notwithstanding) has also coincided with Gibbs being about as outside as it's possible be while still being at the ground.

What annoyed me is in the second quarter, Davies laid a tackle and got the ball. Gibbs was next to him then stayed behind waiting for the ball to be passed to him. Meanwhile an Essendon* player came and tackled Davies - holding the ball. Why did he not call out to him and support the first gamer instead of waiting for him to give him the easy ball.

Doesnt have the tank to play long periods in the middle

my own preference for this bloke is to teach him how to run and carry in the off season then he could become our general down back - he is a good kick normally he needs to be able to break the line clear the flood and penetrate into the forward 50

Because, in Gibbs' defence, Davies should have gathered cleanly, looked behind to check his surrounds and given to Gibbs who was sweeping in to switch play.

It was his first game so he did neither of those. I think we can all forgive him a slow start, the heat was well and truly on at times.

What do you want him to do go in and then we have 2 blokes who would have stuffed up by not using the extra man as an advantage??????????

Davies GOT there first and took far too long to release the pilll, it also happened to him in the 2nd quarter.
First game still adjusting to tempo.

To blame Gibbs is way off the mark

..so, instead you figure a first gamer, adjusting to the tempo shouldn't recieve support from a more senior player..?.. ..the Gibblet didn't even yell to warn him of the bomber chasing.. ..Davies had picked up the ball, the bummer was running in hard from behind.. ..Gibbs neither yelled a warning, nor moved in to at least try and block/sheperd.. ..it happened in the 1st Q.. ..you'd have thought the bake from the coach and media had ALL players on notice for doing not just the contested work, but also the 1%'ers..

I suggest you watch the game again........
Davies was running towards the ball and the bomber player was running front on to Davies then he picked the ball up and turned towards our goal and was too slow to get rid of it pure and simple........

Gibbs was a metre or 2 to the side and IN FRONT of Davies.......

Gibbs had no chance to block/shephard......

Unless you were somehow within a metre of the contest yourself then i don't know how you can say that Gibbs did not yell a warning to him.
I would not have a clue as to whether he did or didn't say anything so i fail to see how you could make that assumption.

..seen the replay a few times.. ..you can see the Gibblet doesn't yell warning [team guilty of this at times].. ..yes i agree that Davies reacted slowly.. ..but he's a first gamer.. ..you expect the Gibblet to be more supportive.. ..also, on the replay it very much appears to show the Gibblet expecting a handball.. ..you can see it by the way he positions himself.... ..i like the Gibblet, just don't like how he's being used off hb.. ..but i was dissappointed that he didn't at least yell a warning to Davies.. ..remembering thinking it the very first time i saw it, still think the same after replays..

Does anyone else agree with me that we should get Gibbs to play the same role as Adam Goodes? He has all the attributes...we usually make Gibbs tag Goodes against Sydney.
He will destroy teams like Goodes in the middle and when he pushes forward, as he is pretty tall. Could become such a weapon.

Ratts has said we are targeting another defender and Kane Lucas could become our 'quarter back' with his skills although thats a lot of pressure for a guy who will be in his second year.

..the Gibblet is actually a bloody good hff.. ..he's got deceptive height, and as a junior used it well.. ..not sure about a Goodes role, maybe more akin to a Ro'K type role for me..

190cm if i remember correctly? I guess it would be a 'robbing peter to pay paul' type thing and our defence would definetely be more shaky and unreliable without him there...i just always feel we are wasting him when i see him defending a good strong lead that no defender could stop anyway...

Right now he is being used to stabalise our defence which is good i guess...but imagine seeing him as a real attacking weapon in the midfield/forward line being another guy the opposition has to worry about and possibly tag.

i suspect the " where to play gibbs " issue is not one we will face in 2011 i am sensing a luke ball - ross lyon type scenario with gibbs and ratten.
