Just an Idea? Ratts has some great tactical knowledge and a lot of passion, but has he got the skills to be a coach? Maybe, but he needs help. And he hasn't really done an apprenticeship like most do. 1 year at Melbourne and a few months under Pagan. So....... what if something like this happened? HEAD COACH: Leigh Matthews MATCH DAY COACH: Brett Ratten FORWARDS COACH: Justin Leppitch ( i think he's done wonders this year. Really have a feeling he'll go places. Was a very smart player) DEVELOPMENT COACH: Robert Harvey MIDFIELD COACH:............ whoever, I have no idea. Maybe Ratts could benefit from being a match day coach / assistant coach under somebody with some experience for a few years. Maybe 2 or 3 years under somebody with senior coaching experience (and successful experience at that) could help Ratts make that transition that he seems to be struggling with now? Thoughts?.......... |

I actually believe match day coaching is Rattens biggest weakness so I couldn't agree. He ball watches too much and is virtually another spectator in the box. He also gets too emotional IMO which clouds his thinking.. |

From the outside looking in it seems as though he has a lot to say to the players, but not enough time and/or eloquence to say it all. Being on the boundary line gives him the opportunity to communicate it all to each player without any hindrance for a given player's learning style. In the post-match, he also spoke about simplifying his message to the players, so I think the two strategies hand in hand will dramatically lower the issues he appears to have on match-day. Obviously I agree with BV that match-day is his weakness, but I think he's taking some serious steps to address that. Needs some equally creative assistants around him, as well as some good communicators. |

Will be interesting if the boundary line coaching is persisted with. A master tactician in the box and our own reserves team with new coaches I believe would help us enormously. |

Ratts greatest strength is his one on one's.Should definately stay on the boundary . |

Ratts said in a post match interview that he was going to stay on the boundary line well that he was "unlikely" to go back to the box which is about as solid an answer as you can get from Ratts http://www.carltonfc.com.au/news/newsar ... fault.aspx |

why exactly is Mark Riley's name not being mentioned in coaching staff lists here? he won an award last year for best assistant or something of the sort....he's HIGHLY regarded and respected at the club and probably has more imput than anyone else in an assistant role. |

You see nothing of the game from the boundary so I am not sure how you can work out what is happening. I would have thought if your assistants are really good they would do the boundary work. Bit different for Roosy, he has next years coach in the box. Anyway who is calling the strategic shots while Ratts barracks from the sidelines? Sticks and Lappo? If coaching from ground level is the way to go, why haven't we tried it before? Why only do it because everyone else is? What was happening at ground level before? |

I think the belief was the same as you hold there gerry: not having the above-ground view for the senior coach was detrimental to his instruction. Fact of the matter is that any mug coach can tell you what's going on from up in the box if you ask them, so if you're the head guy, you can get the info from them, then communicate directly with the players on the interchange, and any of your charges running past, as well as using the runner. The coach can't see the body language of the benched player, wouldn't have a chance to focus for too long on players on-field. Nowadays, just about everyone gets a spell on the bench, so you get a chance to deal with everyone during the quarters as well as at the breaks. It's my opinion that so long as you're getting an idea of the overall view in terms of structure (and personally I think anyone switched on enough can work it out from on the sideline) then down by the boundary line is the best place to be as a head coach. They do it in association football, they do it in the NFL, they do it in basketball, etc. Sure they have a few less players on the field but their field of play is also much smaller. I think it's the way to go. Heck, get a few mugs in the box, get a direct feed to up to four cameras from the broadcaster and put all the position coaches on the boundary. |

Yeah I get the feeling Ratts is a lot more comfortable down on the ground in the action. Certainly worth trying in my opinion.
