Hear where you are going Rexy, but i think Ratts can still maintain his senior roll and have assistance on match day especially if he continues to coach from the boundary. Williams obviously felt secure enough to appoint Laidley for that roll.

Hmm, that didn't last too long though did it.

Look that might seem practical in theory but in practice, a clash of ideologies between a supposed tactical specialist and his senior can cause problems.

Basically, I believe it's the responsibility and role of the 'Senior' coach to provide a sound and productive tactical game style. If his ideologies are seen to be flawed, then perhaps he should be placed into a different role.
Personalities would of course be a big factor but all Laidley would be required to do would be to give suggestions. It would be up to Ratts to act on them. You would hope all the assistants would be doing this.
As for Williams he stayed one year too long and had lost the players not because the Laidley appointment was a bad one.

I've been all over the ladder predictor.

Can't see us missing a home final if we beat Freo.

If we lose both, certain to play interstate.

If we lose to Freo, will be a struggle to get a home final.

The Freo game is MASSIVE, how appropriate that it's on a FRIDAY.

But can't you see the basic flaw with theory?

What if Ratts dismisses a strategy that Laidley offers him because it doesn't fit in with his ideology?

What's the point of bringing in someone with (supposed) superior strategies to work under a supposedly flawed ideology? It's not logical.

Nine is the new eleven.
Need to win against all the teams in the bottom five
Sydney
Adelaide
Freo
Hawthorn
And then at least one of the higher placed teams
Collingwood
GWS
Brisbane
GC
WCE

In such an even, topsy turvey season, I’d say we’re just as likely to drop one of the four against the bottom sides and win two of the others. I don’t really rate GC that highly either so I reckon they’ll be one for a start

GCS usually beat us, even when they are shit.

We play a brand of footy like WC.
On that proviso, we beat Collingwood easily.... :smoking: :gift:

We'll beat GC - we are a better side, even @ their home ground.

I had a look at the ladder after 17 games from the last 5 seasons.
With this small sample as a guide we'll need at least 9 wins and a decent percentage to make the 8 :-
2019 - 9 wins, 110.2% (8th)
2018 - 10 wins, 119% (7th-9th separated by percentage)
2017 - 9 wins, 109.7% (8th-12th separated by percentage)
2016 - 11 wins, 111.9% (8th)
2015 - 9.5 wins, 102.4% (8th-9th separated by percentage)

The two most difficult games are WCE, and Brisbane if we play them at the Gabba. Anything else we can win, those two games will be tougher.

I rate our chances against WC better than GWS. The Giants midfield usually torch us.

If you are 8 rounds in to a 17 round season and 5 wins has you in the 8 - You would think 9 wins is not going to get you there - most likely need 10

can we win another 6 is the question
4 we should win
2 are 50/50
3 doubtful

where is that ladder predictor when you need it

The Melbourne and Port losses are going to be VERY costly I fear.

We'd be second wouldn't we otherwise?

Totally agreed. I've got us having five very winnable games (GCS, SYD, HAW, FRE ADE) and four where we'll start underdog (COL, BRI, WCE, GWS). I'm also assuming that we won't win all five of those very winnable games, meaning we'd need to win at least two of the four games where we'll be the underdog to make it to ten wins. I fear we're going to end up 9th and the cruel loss against Port will hurt even more.

Hope I'm wrong too, but also fear we'll fall just short. Think we'll likely finish 10th or 11th.
Despite it being a different type of season. Some would say tainted or compromised, would be a great experience for our boys to taste some finals action so hopefully they win the games they're supposed to and pull off an upset or two and sneak in.

Any team in the 8 can win it based on this year's low scoring unpredictable games.
Brisbane is in the box seat if it's played at the Gabba.

And I reckon it would be hard to go past West Coast if everything ends up in Perth.
