Is there really THAT much difference between our current situation and Geelong's of 2006?

Yes. Geelong went on to win some premierships. Will we?

Geelong of 2006 had made the previous two finals series losing to the Lions in the Prelim of 2004 and losing that memorable final to Sydney in 2005. They were a few points away from a GF in 2004 and well on the way in 2005 when they lost to the eventual premiers. We are yet to win a final in around 9 years so no I don't see the comparison at all TBH.

Both teams lost a close final after leading by plenty
Both teams came out next year and delivered well under expectations after looking the goods at the start of the year.
Both teams employed Leading Teams around their respective time periods.
Bomber Thompson looked gone for all money at the end of 06.

Geelong came from further back and arguably with a less talented list at the time (still had the likes of Spriggs, Matt McCarthy, David Johnson, Tenace still getting regular games). I'm not 100% sure Ratten is the right person for the job any more than anyone else here, but I think it's an irrelevant question whilst Sticks is at the helm.

Lets not throw the baby out with the bathwater here, and demand for a full independent review of the football department. Still a fair few remnants from the bad old days around the place (Teague and Lappin surely gone at the end of the year), and things can certainly change for the better. Can anyone name one player on our list who is playing above themselves/their ability at this point in time?

Geelong sat down and asked itself the really hard questions - will we?

How long will this presidency and its lack of accountability continue?

When will we decide to do what it takes to make the journey, not take the shortcuts we think will speed up the journey?

I hope Doc is right and a new president will come along next year - this year is shot but I want a new powerful club with a powerful, inclusive vision, to start asking itself the hard questions something, I think, we have not yet done properly, despite all the shite of the last decade.

Certainly didn't happen overnight though. This was from round 4 in 2007 - http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/chapp ... 1113436723

Change the club name and theres not much difference.

I'm not sure what Leading Teams actually does beside have a "confrontational" round table, but does employing groups such as this actually deflect the need for Ratten to show leadership; to stamp his imprimatur, viz a viz, by dropping players, etc.

He seems to show little strength of leadership by referring to stats to disguise obvious deficiencies; failing to drop key players, motivating a team to actually start a game from the first quarter etc etc.

I dare say Ratts Sticks et al exhausted all their leadership capabilities on these gen-Yers before they resorted to Leading Teams.

Ok, so Ratten needs his arse kicking and sent to the room of mirrors for a good hard look.

Nah, the difference is that no player or coach at Carlton would come out swinging like that unfortunately.

My thoughts exactly. Chapman is a leader, not afraid to bruise a few sensitive egos to get to the right result.

Are you trying to say Ratts is rooting Setanta's missus?

Both brought in an injured prone and underperforming ruckman who was written off and bagged everyone.

Both have average tall forwards.

If you are comparing a very talented team of footballers to ours, you are seriously delusional.

They had Thompson in 2006.

They had few round 1 draft picks.

They have the mental capacity then and now. No comparison.

That statment sounds like a Ratten clutching at straws statement.

Geelong were far more advanced in 2006 than we are now. Geelong of 2006 was more like the Doggies of 2007, good side losing their way. Or even Hawthorn of 2009 early 2010.

I however don't know the future like Blueman, so can't say whether we will win the flag next year. I don't think we will though.

Have to say I agree. Especially with this quote...

Quote:
"It is something we are going to have to change as a side. You just can't be happy playing and getting your money and having a good lifestyle or whatever it is.

"You have got to go out there and do everything you can to win. You have got blokes like Darren Milburn Ryan Houlihan, who has been here for 13 or 14 years, who hasn't won one (premiership) and you hear him say the culture is still the same.

If Kade Simpson, as an example, came out in the media and said the above I would be over the moon.

Until the players get it, they won't get it. The fire has to come from within.

Doesn't even make sense in the slightest.

Thompson in 2006 was as good as cooked, same as what Knights/Ratten are now. Over-reliance on Kent Kingsley, Cameron Ling was apparently well overweight and refused to get off the beer/parma diet, Ablett was a soft outside receiver, Mooney was in the same situation Waite was in that he couldn't go a few weeks without getting rubbed out for undisciplined acts. Steven King was captain by default, and didn't really want the job.

They had few round 1 draft picks, we did. So my point being, is that are we any further back than what Geelong were, given they essentially had a less talented list than what we did?

The age breakdown of their list is very similiar to ours. Milburn and Sanderson were their vets, Scotland and Houlihan ours. After that, it falls away drastically to blokes around the 80-100 game mark.

Bring on 2011, as long as it brings the hard facts with it.
