Carlton is in turmoil, and some tough decisions need to be made.

The future of Brett Ratten as coach needs to be determined. I know some disagree but personally I can't see any sign that he is the man for the job.

What I want to know is how is the board equipped to make these important decisions?

The leader is Sticks who is compromised by friendships, and whose judgement is questionable. Then there are some businessmen and the odd QC who all rubber stamped Ratten's extension, and would look like gooses revoking it.

Are these businessmen football people, with the knowledge to make the right decision?

Are the businessmen comfortable in their position, and reluctant to rock the boat?

The Board members are representatives of us, the members. The picture I get though, is of guys who are there to raise money, and who may not be equipped to make football decisions.

That said, I don't know much about them so I would like people's opinions -

Can we have the confidence in our Board to make the hard decisions for Carlton's future?

Or is the Board just a bunch of Stephen Kernahan's yes men?

I know there are some very capable people on our board who are as frustrated as many of us with what is going on.
The board is completely aware of all the issues at the moment and I am incredibly confident they have the wherewithal to make the tough decision- if such a decision needs to be made.

If they are aware Josh, can you advise what is being done about it internally?

As a member, I would clearly like to know.

I think an old favourite on TC - Synbad mentioned something about fish, heads.

Just can't recall what he said

Josh I respcet your point and it is reassuring to hear those sentiments expressed.

But there are several things that detract from my confidence in the Board:

1) Many of the poor structural patterns in our play were obviously present last year. If the board were frustrated, why did we not change even ONE assistant coach last year.

2) I can't see anyone on the Board having the guts or authority to say to Sticks "Umm Mr. President, your mate is not up to it."

The club has lost direction since the passing of the late great Dick Pratt.

Whatever happens - they should remember:

WE VOTE

If they sacked Fevola, I can't see them avoiding a similar decision on Ratten if it's needed.

They would look piss weak and like hypocrites if they kept a divisive coach who doesn't have the support of the players.

I hope.

Has there been a backlash from the players who were mates with Fevola?

If our form continues he will be given the chop, if he turns it around and we make the 8 he'll stay. Not looking good for Ratts at the moment though.

SV, I'm just saying that there are Directors who will make the tough decisions when and if such decisions need to be made. I don't think personal alliances to Ratten will have any bearing as to whether he coaches our side or not.
They are aware of all the issues and will make a fully informed decision at the end of the year. There's a meeting tomorrow night with Ratten attending- this had been scheduled for months so nothing out of the ordinary.

My personal opinion is that a perfect result would be for Ratts to stand down as Head Coach and work in the 'Buckley' role as a Senior Assistant. This might seem fanciful but I would love this arrangement to somehow be reached with a properly appointed Head Coach.

Not sure Dick alive or dead makes an iota of difference....and to your next point...well...some vote...most don't and sometimes voting members (only 9,000 strong) don't even vote. Whatever your stance, the Talking Carlton forum is not reflective of the voting member as so few voting members reside here. That was made as plain as day at the last election.

Simon....
Twas nice seeing you today!
I have finally come to decision.
The payers have skills... We've seen
They lack direction and there is NO ONE in the Coaches Box atm. to direct anything other than a VFL side!

Why would it be interesting. What ever I post you will feel attacked for some strange reason.

My thoughts this week are the same as they have been for the past month.

interesting discussion....

Unfortunately, I don't have as much faith in the Board as Josh

One must remember that a decision to remove Rats as senior coach is essentially an admission that the decision the very same board made 3 years ago was a MISTAKE !

In this regard, will the board members allow the football club they love to be placed ahead of their own personal egos??? Not sure ???

Post subject:  Re: The Board of the Carlton Football Club

Unfortunately our Board is week and takes most of it's direction from Greg Swann.......Of the current Board the only Directors who are worth keeping are Ruffy Germinder, Zac Fried, Mark LuGudice, Richard Newton (only because he puts in $100k per year as he too is weak when it comes to making a decision) and Ari Suss.

Sticks needs to go as no one will strongly debate any footy issues with him as all the Directors feel very confortable in their position whilst Stcks is Pres, Mark Harrisson, Steve Moulton, Simon Wilson, Marcus Clark and Adrian Gleeson contribute very little and the Board wouldn't miss them if they were gone...

We need to get new players on the Board such as Ian Prendergast (currently employed by the Players Association), Michael Sexton or any other player who knows whats required to represent the footy department / players at Board level and who won't be swayed by outside influences.

Just remember that at the moment, the key figures who run the club are some of the 1995 players, Fraser Brown, Greg Williams, Craig Bradley who have a huge amount of pull with Sticks and Gleeson and this is evident by the boys club mentality currently at Carlton...

It's time for our Board to put the Carlton Football Clubs best interest first and not their own otherwise this great club will continue to struggle off field for a very long time....

As for the hard decisions on Ratts, whatever happens, we need to ensure that the Board appoint independant people such as Robert Walls to complete a process when deciding on a new coach when Ratts gets the flick otherwise we will not get the best candidate if we don't go through this process...

I hope that the Directors put their ego's to one side and really make the hard decisions required as the members have been through enough pain over the last decade..
