This "umpires hates x team" is rubbish.

Umpires call it how they see it, they dont favour teams. They are professionals and get analysed extensively on each performance, and get paid very well for each game, so why would they risk it all by doing something like favouring certain teams? Any fans who seriously believe that umpires go out there and favour certain teams over others are deluded.

For the record, Carlton rank 11th in the league for free kicks for and 4th for least free kicks against. Not nearly as bad as some teams.

The "blaming umpires" after a loss excuse is one of my biggest pet hates in football and unfortunately Carlton fans seem to be the worst at it

The thing with the umpiring last night is that aside from a holding the ball against Andrew Walker - you could argue that the umpire made the correct call every time...albeit 'tiggy touchwood' ones. Brisbane got a few shockers against them too - it's just what you've got to expect under Geischen and the first game back after they've been dragged across the coals by most 'C' grade journos in Australia.

One of my biggest pet hates is supporters referring to the free kick count when discussing the quality/shitness of the umpiring.

They may or may not "hate" teams (although some umpires seem far more blind to frees for us than others), but they definitely do favour certain players.

Actually dont mind the umpires going a bit nuts on the fifties. Particularly the ones against people creeping over the mark. The heavy zoning, high pressure teams have been creeping over the mark for a couple of years now in a bid to slow teams up so they can set up.

If umps are instructed to keep an eye on it then the AFL are aware of this cheating so hopefully teams like the Hawks, Saints and magpies suffer the most.

I'd also like them to crack down on the "Harry O'Brien" manouvre. You know, where he shepherds the man on the mark. I noticed last night that hawthorn does it too.

I don't care if it's legal - it just LOOKS so illegal and is surely not within the spirit of the game.

I wish our coaching staff would be the first to come up with an innovative way of countering it and then roll it out in the next Filth game.

Agree. Also the Milne use of the umpire as shepherd, where the umpire calls a mark and holds the man on the mark, and is instructing the player minding the mark, when the little maggot runs around and plays on, usually putting the umpire between him and the player minding the mark, so the player minding the mark has zero chance of getting to Milne. If he tries, then he will either collect the umpire, or be pinged 50m for going over the mark. Umpire-sanctioned cheating.

Yeah, Gehrig used to do it too. Surely the ump should just blow his whistle and raise his arm and tell 'em to go back over the mark till HE (the ump) gets out of the way.

And with the O'Brien thing, why can't O'Brien's opponent just stand with him (or in fact between him and the man on the mark)?

I've said it before. The AFL need to throw some of their millions at umpiring, attract some former players. Only then will the standard increase.

Umpires should be standing a metre behind the man on the mark to avoid it happening. No reason they can't line the player up standing just behind the player on the mark

How can they go from the umpiring in our game, to the umpiring in the Hawks v Dogs game, where the whistle was barely blown all night. I saw one passage of play where there were 3 "in the backs" and two "held after disposing" in a 15 second passage of play, none of which were marginal, and none of which were called. I know they were very different intensity games but how can they justify being so inconsistent between matches (let along within them).

I reckon this idea has merit. What's the latest on Mark Fraser's progress?

The idea of ex-players umpiring though may open up the whole argument of "he only paid them free kicks because he used to play for them" and so on. I think it's a reasonable idea, but there's no doubt this would come up.

Spot on! When we win the umpire bashers disappear. It is not the umpires that decide the game it is the players. If we are good enough the umpire is irrelevant, as it should be.
