Post subject:  Re: Rd 14 Pros & Cons

Pros
Yarran - Imagine what he will be like from 21yrs on
Garlett - Defensive pressure terrific
Sauce - Never shirked an effort even after being jumped into all night
Robbo - Moving it on much quicker and not trying to do to much. Looks better for it. Also he makes a few other senior players look shabby the way he attacks the contested footy.
Simmo - Mr consistency.
Army - Don't stop running
Scotto - Hard as a cats head. His gut busting efforts last night stood out like a beacon.

Cons
Two senior players refusing to hit in hard and low when it is their turn. Their stats still don't set the tone for the rest when it comes to intensity and desperation at the footy.
Knee jerk Umpires. How can a so called professional, multi million dollar competition be so reactive to criticism by the media and talkback radio.

Post subject:  Re: Rd 14 Pros & Cons

Pros:
- Solid if panicky win right when we need it
- Garlett, Betts and Yarran all performing and all offering something different
- Lets be honest, of their 9 goals, 3 or so came from 50's and 2 came from defensive kicking errors. They were smashed and we made them look better than they are.
- Straightening up. A few times we had a free player out wide on the wings but ignored to try to go through the centre.
- The Russell / henderson / Robinson / Scotland / Hampson / Gartlett goal in the second

Cons:
- Tackling, particularly Andrew Walker's 5 missed tackles for the night
- Panicking in the first with incessant possession to no advantage
- old style flooding football again
- Need more polish in the back half, need a third option to deliver out of 50.

Post subject:  Re: Rd 14 Pros & Cons

Pros
- Eddie Betts. Best mark in the side. Who in AFL that size has ever been as good a mark? Bousustow?
- Ratten for playing Yarran up the ground. He isn't a small forward. He is wingman-onballer
- Scotland
- I must have missed something but I thought Hammer was good. Watch tapwork
- The Fev trade is looking good

Cons
- Ratten for atrocious forward set up in the first qtr. When will we structure the forward line to our strength and tell Setanta to play within 30 meters of goal creating contests for our little guys. Once, we started kicking the ball deep we were fine

- Jamo is really struggling. Never been as good since his shoulder injuries
- Tackling- the intensity isn't there
- We won't win a premiership with carrazzo, Thornton in the side. When will the match committee get games into some kids and take a long term view?
- We are really struggling we played the worst side in the league and the scoreboard flattered us. Hopefully, we can find 4 wins and sneak into the eight

Post subject:  Re: Rd 14 Pros & Cons

PROS

55 point win and the 4 points.
Kept them to only a couple of goals after 1stQ which they created (without the help of umpires and Carlton clangers)
Simmo, Judd, Murphy, Scotland, Armfield in the middle
Betts, Garlett, Yarran, Houlihan in the forwardline.
Henderson never stops presenting: a gem.
A couple of the goals (read Molsey above) and the big 60m goal from Scotland were great goals.
Hampson is back, albeit a bit rusty.

CONS

Over umpiring. What is it with the 50m penalties and free goals?
Should have won by more. Brisbane were hopeless.
Walker's tackling (as mentioned by Molsey)...just terrible and weak. He needs to concentrate more.
Jamison continues with his clangers and imo overrated. We just haven't got an alternative.
The whole backline was ordinary tonight. Thornton is not better than White. Sorry but I'm off the TBird bandwagon.
Setanta tries hard and we need a better footballer to really take the next step and his spot.
We need a KP who will take a few marks: Setanta is the best we've got atm.
Missed Bower, Waite, Kreuzer...and imo Lucas and White (for TBird)
Sauce got beaten by Leuenberger. Not mobile enough for the modern game. Serviceable at best, and he's the best we've got.
Geez, I knew Grigg would be rusty, but I did expect him to improve as the game wore on; he didn't look like he belongs in AFL.
Need to link up better, and the positioning for the receive handball was dangerous most of the time.
We need to run a bit harder than that if we are going to play finals and win one or two of them.

PROS

- Scotland, this bloke just continues to get it done every week, he is a very very good consistent player. Tough and makes the right decisions. BOG
- Garlett, his chasing and harrassing is superb! Creates chances from no where... really like how he is going about it
- Carrazzo... his foot skills arent the best, but watch the game closely last night, he stitched up Rich bigtime
- Simpson... under rated... works very hard
- We won and no injuries ( i think )

CONS

- Walkers foot skills.... pathetic
- Thornton as a footballer in general, weak, and doesnt make good decisions with the ball... not sure what he brings to the team... must be dropped
- Our skills and decision making

If we lob up with the attitude we did last night next week... Bulldogs will destroy us...

ROFL! In our top 5 last night. How did Rich go? A handful of possessions and one goal courtesy of a lace-out pass from JR.

We are in a different era now, and you only have to listen to young players get interviewed on TV. They don't say things like "Player X is great, he had 32 possessions with 78% disposal efficiency". What they talk about is playing roles for the team. "He played his role well". "He's doing a role for us", etc.

Carrots and Houlihan have been playing specific roles this year. Carrots puts a heavy tag on one of the opposition's best on-ballers who uses the ball well, and Hoops puts a "forward tag" on the opposition's best rebound 50 half-back. They've done it pretty well so far with obviously a few slip-ups.

By all means, criticise them when they don't play their role well, but look THERE not elsewhere!!!

Post subject:  Re: Rd 14 Pros & Cons

Pros:
As stated above Heath Scotland, he is as important to our structure as the 'star' players. His long goal in the second was the spark that got us playing fast long footy ino the forward line. As I have said before "Thank You Collingwood"
Houla taking pack marks!! WTF!
The head to head battle between Simon Black and Judd, how footy should be played.
Not losing our heads when we started badly.
Setanta, while the stats are not great, he gives the forward line prescence and takes two or three opposition players with him, this allowing the small forwards space to work in or in Eddies case go one on one.

Cons
The surface of Eithad is not up to AFL standard. Period.

Pros:
Unlimited

Cons:
Not kicking 20 goals and not winning by 10 goals. Just short on both accounts.

Pros: The team realising when an opposition floods the forward 50, we can open up just enough space to have a ping from 40+ m

Cons: People getting excited that Carrazzo stitched up Rich; he's no athlete, and his ability in close is a myth. Should have been trying to shut down Black. Just an OK game from Carrots.

Yeah!! Like all the other taggers have been able to do for the past 10 years!!!

Post subject:  Re: Rd 14 Pros & Cons

Pros:
Bower on MMM, said only quad soreness, had a scan and no damage so expects to play next week
We won
Get to watch it again with my little bloke
Eddie
Carrots towelling up Rich
Guttsed out a 9 goal  win We definitely weren't that good and all the papers said the same
Beat a team we should
Yarran - classy goal on the run from 50 got us going and kicking skills are sensational
Saw some good blocks for Judd and also some hand offs with shepard to Judd instead of running fwd looking for the handball (Dare I say some Good Coaching :yikes: )

Cons:
1st qtr :banghead:
Shit disposal
Grigg - off to GC for sure :donk: - Hopefully better for the run, could tell he has been instructed not to kick unless there is an easy target a distance away
Hammer - Hope he is better for the run and gets to play in the ruck a bit more, but couldn't get amongst it in the fwd line
Walker - plenty of run and plenty of kicks into the fwd line, but mostly long bombs that didn't hit a target, happy with his run, but give it to someone who can deliver - Gibbs or Murph or Yarran

Yeah!! Like all the other taggers have been able to do for the past 10 years!!!

They showed themselves how to do it last night. He loves to fire handballs out quick and low, and his team mates expect it on a platter. A couple of times last night, we got in the way of one of his handballs, and their clearance work unravelled.

Position Carrots on the fringe of the stoppage, watching Black's movements, then get ready to close down the handball. They rarely go above head height, and all it takes is a slight deflection. Then tag him around the ground.

Pros:

Not a whole lot to get excitied from last nights game.
The brothers were awesome to watch.
Henderson is very impressive and a smart player

Cons:
Walkers kicking, decision making and tackling is terrible. Just can't rely on run to make it as a player

Post subject:  Re: Rd 14 Pros & Cons

Thornton plays the most inoffensive brand of footy in the AFL, just insipid.

Jamo looks much better when he takes the game on.

Post subject:  Re: Rd 14 Pros & Cons

PROS
We won easily
Scotto. Wonderful game, BOG. The old man is in the form of his life. He is one absolute successful trade
Yarran, didn't do a lot but he is pure class. If he keeps developing could be our best draft pick of the last decade
Garlett - wonderful opportunist. takes them on, terrific forward pressure
Betts- a favourite, terrific hands, always been a great mark. If he was 195 cm he would be a superstar contested mark
Hendo, good head, will be a great contributor and leader.
Almost forgot Robbo, makes some errors, but could teach a few team mates a bit about desperation. I thoght it was him, a second year player, who provided the leadership that got us going. While half the team is playing ring around the rosy he was full bore at the contested ball. Is he the new Wiggo? With perhaps a bit more skill and a bit less smarts.

CONS
Possibly the worst 55pt win I have seen. What happened to the side that beat the Cats and Sts?
Early in the third I was wondering why I hadn't stayed home and watched Masterchef
Some woefully indecisive footy.
Jamo has lost his mojo, just looks tentative, and unsure with the ball
Slow sideways movement of ball
Can someone tell Ratts that we didn't use one of our precious #1 draft oicks to get a a halfback flank tagger. Put Gibbs in the middle. he did quite well on Power but I am sure Voss was happy he didn't have to tag him. Gibbs is our second best player, he should be winning contested ball in the middle not playing a link man tagger at half back
Setanta has lost his mojo. Looked exhausted early. Had a reasonable first as a hit up forward but then played deep and defensive. Not sure what his instructions are but he seems to have taken a step back and may get one more chance until Waite comes back. he needs to be moving, not standing in the square. Same for Hammo. He is not a good contesetd mark. If he plays forward his strength is his size pace and leap. Surely you would want him to lead to take advantage of that
Grigg looks a shadow of the player he seemed to be becoming 2 years back
Why retain Ellard on the rookie list if we have no intention of playing him? He is BOG every week in the ressies.
Lots of sloppy footy
For the Lions I thought Leunberger looked very good esp early and Cornelius has great hands, bit short though
Thought Jacobs and Hammo battled well, aqnd Hammo will improve (although he is a poor ball handler and awkward when the ball is on the deck), but we are going to miss Big k big time

Caz wrote:

Not sure who you had in mind Caz but I was disappointed when AJ turned a very good kick from Setanta into a bad kick by looking at what was around him instead of running straight to where the ball was going to drop. It was subtle but it happened. Instead of a set shot 20 metres out the Lions won the ball. It is those little things that cost.

Oh and one more thing. I thought we might have addressed discipline after the last two games, but we gave up many costly 50s. Sure the umps were red hot - who would have thought it after the Baker debacle? The Coaches need to instill discipline. Don't go over the mark don't touch a player after he has marked etc. Don't give the umps any reason to ping you for 50. It is not rocket science
A good side would have punished us for sloppy ordinary footy. I look forward to our test next week. Hoepfully the other Carlton will turn up. The one we saw early in the year.
