Couldn't see this elsewhere, apologies if it is.

Little snippet in Hutchies column today about the third year of Ratten's contract (2011) having a get-out clause for Carlton, but confirming that the Board voted during the week not to take advantage of it and confirmed his third year.

Can I ask 3 questions....

Why wouldn't Carlton wait till the end of the season to make this decision?

Why wouldn't Carlton announce the decision on the website to the members?

Should we believe anything Hutchy writes anyway?

They were waiting on the mods to lock the "sakc Ratten" thread before they announce it.

But it would be best if the mods locked it straight away just to add to the mystique.

Signing season starts a little earlier for coaches so that all parties have time to make preparations for the following season in the event there's a change of guard.

Announce that they've chosen not to exercise an option on an existing contract? Why?

Probably not, but I took the time with you just the same.

Don't see the benefit of doing it now. Is anyone going to poach Ratts? Have they approached him to replace Pim Verbeek?

I'd suggest that part of the arrangement stipulated that the board had to come to a decision by the half-way mark of the 2010 season. While no one may poach Ratts, it's far easier for him and his assistants to do their job with some certainty about what they're implementing actually carries over into 2011.

So in effect if things go pear-shaped in between now and the end of the season, we'd have to pay him out next years wage if we wanted someone else for 2011?

Did anyone here know before last Sunday that a "Carlton get out clause" was even written into Ratts' contract?

Point taken, though there was strong reaction to the EARLY contract extension in the first place IIRC.

To hear reports that there was a 'get out clause' was interesting, although one does keep in mind that this 'report' does comes from Hutchy.

Sorry Rexy wasnt trying to have a go. I was just curious. The clause is news to me and probably would have silenced a few of the more vocal critics of the extention at the time.

No worries club, either way though some 'debate-able' decision making by the board.

Possibly although we dont know what was in the contract at all and i doubt many here would know how a coaching contract is written up. Perhaps there were set times for both the extention and the confirmation in the original contract he had when he took over from Pagan. We didnt know about the get out clause at all so i would imagine there are a number of things we dont know about.
