I agree. Close the roof

The worst part is they only seem to open the roof when it's sunny. When it's overcast it's usually shut.

I'm not sure why the roof is left open for day games.

A portion of the ground in glary sunlight that causes difficulty in seeing the ball for players in that area.

Looks ridiculous on tv with continual camera light adjustments.

Common sense please!

Docklands Stadium management famously declined the Bureau of Meteorology's advice that the ground was facing the wrong way during construction.

Stadium management decided the way it was eventually built, with it situated facing the City as it does, looked better and built it as they did.

The Bureau had suggested the planned location of the ground would cause issues during the day with the sun for both spectators and should they wish to grow grass. Spectators would be bathed in sunlight, unable to see proceedings and the grass wouldn't ever get the sunlight necessary to properly grow.

Alas, the opinion of experts wasn't good enough for Collo and co. and the ground was built like it was.

I sat in the sun for 3 quarters. It's not pleasant. Was with two hawthorn supporting mates, and I'd picked up three carlton member's hats at the tent before the game. They were happy to wear them. That's how bad it was.

You could tell in the first quarter when the forwards were leading for the mark and had to stop as they lost the ball in the sun.

The missus and I could not see jack 5hit, we were looking straight at the low winter sun!! To make matters worse, we started getting sunburnt after an hour or so. Makes me appreciate standing room even more. No sun in the eyes there. Was up the Hawks end too. Looked pretty bright though, and it's always the end that the sun hits the hardest. A bit like at the G how the sun hits most of the southern stand.

We lost the toss and it was interesting some of the terrible kicking in the first qtr were low kicks getting chopped off, I suspect the coaches were saying don't kick it too high into the sun, and whilst I nice idea -when you are struggling it's just more data to process in your mind. Ironically had we kicekd it high I suspect more kicks would have hit the ground for our small forwards.

What about Collo buying a second hand ticketing system for the stadium? It was one of those ancient systems with the black screen and fluro green writing. Ticket sellers would have to answer Y or N to about 15 questions before being able to print a ticket. This meant that each ticket or group of tickets purchased took a couple of minutes to process and resulted in ridiculous delays for people getting into the stadium. Collins lack of knowledge of computing systems meant that he'd been conned. Of course he would have been warned by the "experts" but they knew nothing according to the dufus Ian Collins. the less money he spent on getting the stadium up and running, the more money that ended up in his pocket. He then promptly blamed spectators for getting to the ground too late.

How is it any different to sitting in the GSS (Punt Rd end) at the G with the sun directly in your eyes? NONE It doesn't matter which direction a stadiums runs, some part of it will be affected by the sun and or lack of. Most roofed stadiums around the world have UV lights to help promote grass growth. It's responsible turf management. Even the G has problems growing grass along the northern stand.

Must be great living in the high-rise apartment block adjacent to the stadium. Not to mention the waste of energy for the lights.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Collo was at the AFL when Docklands Stadium was built and sent to work there later on when it was a basketcase. As such he had no involvement in which direction the ground faced. I also fail to see how the direction the ground is built contributes to it having trouble growing grass. It would have little impact on how much sinlight it receives. In fact if you look at this photo, I'd only imagine it receives more sunlight facing this direction than it would if the goals faced East-West

You do realise Collins was appointed to Docklands some years after the stadium was designed, changed for AFL, approved and built, don't you?
