Denham's response was "why would the Gold Coast waste their time chasing Grigg".

Grigg is the level of player that GC and WS will end up prizing away from another club. They'll land one reasonable to big fish and the rest will be middle tier players. 22 run out every week, it won't be a Gary Ablett plus 21 teenagers.

The guy hasn't a clue at all, seriously.

Agree to a certain extent TUB but one thing does stand out to me re Denham. After the Essendon* game where everyone wanted Ratts' head and the media were circling like vultures it was (unbelievably so) Greg Denham who kept the level head and claimed that it was way too early to be dismissing Ratts and that he "at absolute minimum" had this year and some of next year to get things right. So as much as I've hated him and bagged him in the past I really respected him for saying that.

Quite frankly if I was the GC17 I wouldn't trade 1 single pick in 2010. I would take my lumps the 1st 3 or 4 years and the next 4 will probably reap about 4 Premierships.

The talent they can stack away will be truly amazing.

I don't think Shaun is a good fit for the Gold Coast. It's much harder to get a marriage annulled in Queensland than in Nevada.

Nah Denham is right on this one...he will go after all the bigger fish first, he will se what he has caught and at a later stage might consider a 4th year player stuck in the magoos. Hard to believe he would commit to Grigg before he has a decent crack at some higher credentialed Blues.

You don't believe the stories re Harbrow or Q Lynch ?

I am not up to date for sure....but seems to me that a guy who has been injured, started the year in the twos, may struggle to fit in to the best 22, but has some good talent, would be a perfect target for the GC. They could throw him money and opportunity that the Blues cannot guarantee. Likely to go/stay?

This has been mentioned before. A rumour floating around is that Grigga has actually signalled his intention to the MC to go to GC and this has contributed to his lack of game-time. But this is al rumour. Personally, if Grigga was the only player we'd lose, I'll sign that line.

If Grigg was playing well enough to get a game over currently selected players, he'd be in the team, don't worry about that. At the moment the MC has bigger fish to fry than victimising a player who is or is not going to GC in the future. Sounds like a useless rumour to me.

Hellas, Denham also said Ratts had certain clauses written into his contract (ie not making the finals this year) that could see him replaced at the end of the year. This of coarse added more fuel to the fire at the time. Seems like he had all bases covered.

The gold coast experiment will be interesting. The titans have made the finals of the NRL almost every year, yet their crowd figures are alarmingly low this year and they are in or near the top 4 at the moment. Similarly the soccer team has been a bit of disaster in terms of crowds. So maybe they need to be up and running straight away. you are right, players like Grigg or Nathan ablett are never going to win you a flag. His brother might be worth it. GC will trade a 1st round draft pick for a mature age ruckman - they wont want their 2 or 3 prize 18 year old ruckman taking their lumps for 4 years - they will be busted up Josh Frasers by the time their window opens.

They dont have to give away any of their prized picks. With their stack of cash and kids on minimal wages, the uncontracted players will be their bonanza. with the AFL deciding compensation, you can bet the GC will be laughing all the way to draft day. It's an open cheque book that will construct a super team within 4 years.

Interesting discussion........the first 2 years is critical to the Gold Coast. If they have a group of kids getting smashed every week then they lose the momentum they currenty have. I have been up there and you can get access very easily to the people within (it is like a big country town) through corporate lunches and the feeling is very positive. Access to the best kids, access to uncontracted players and a new sporting facility......if they become a bottom team in the first couple of years then thye lose it. Which is why they need Ablett to keep the spirit going while they stay down the bottom until the kids mature (could take 6 years).
