All clubs have rookie success stories but looking at team on Monday night we have had some really good gets from the rookie list and it just shows that astute drafting doesnt stop with the national draft - Whilst early picks kreuz yarran gibbs murphy walker are also crucial the rookie list and the character and sort of players that get a second chance on that list after being passed over and really make it work are a important constituent part of the team Off the rookie list in Monday nights team includes Carrazzo Garlett Jamison jacobs joseph thorton white and Setanta if you include international rookies -whilst no superstars at this stage in that lot some very accomplished footballers - also interestingly Jamo and carrazzo are part of the team leadership group - Composition of the team with all those rookies is a testament to the persistence/perserverance of those rookies but also some very good off field management |

In the rookie draft could the terms "High Risk, High Return" be so true? For some reason these players have been ignored i.e. can't kick on the opposite foot or is lazy or was injured in critical final year of TAC or is too slow or too short for KPP etc. They are in the system and when opportunity knocks they work harder maybe than someone who has been drafted top 50 because they are on the curtting edge. I love the rookie draft. |

Think we've done very well. What is also interesting is the relative success of indiginous players coming from the rookie draft. Think Garlett, Betts, Jurrah, Wonaeamirri, Aaron Davey, Lovett, Harbrow etc. Think it may be worth going for some indiginous X factor in the rookie draft every year. |

A lot of it has to do with work ethic. A lot of young players don't have that elite work ethic so get passed on early in the draft. They have just as much talent so when they get drafted in the rookie draft or psd their particular club can work on getting the most out of them, it works. |

It seems that rookies work harder, earlier, because they know they've only got a limited opportunity to show what they're made of and they need to work harder (and have some luck with injuries) to stay on the list. Also, don't forget Carrots, who was on the Cats rookie list before he came to us. |

Whilst obviously first and second round picks would do better on average than rookie draft picks, I wonder what the difference would be for late national draft picks (eg 55+) versus rookie draft picks? I doubt the rookie draft picks would have done any worse, they may have done better. |

Great minds think alike,or is it fools never differ? Got to agree Frank,it is a great tribute to our recruiters, the development coaches, and the players themselves for applying themselves to the monumental task of gaining promotion off the rookie list. |

Something must be crook when we have to resort to talking up our performance in the rookie draft as much as we do. I mean to say - if our rookie drafting has been so successful, imagine what our list would be like if we actually got serious. I don't really think it is healthy logic, in the long term, to praise our performance in the RD. If it had been absolutely remarkable then fair enough but it hasn't. |

I think our RD's tend to be more instinctual picks......and out higher picks more methodical and procedural as to not waste or bugger them up... I could be barking up the wrong tree but perhaps we should use our instinct more right across the board... |

Methodical, Procedural, Analytical and Instinct all play a part in the formulation of the list. The same approach is taken for both the ND draft list & the Rookie Draft List. Regards Cazzesman |

Thanks Mick nice to hear from you- Im not surprised that a couple of old blue boys would appreciate and have similiar thoughts as to the bluecollar efforts required to first ,make it on the rookie list and then succeed as senior players PAF - Im also not surprised you think it is to our detriment that we point out its successes Monday our full back chb ff second ruckman -second top goal scorer - arguably our BOG all came from the rookie list why wouldnt we celebrate the achievements - its always been the same premiership teams all have guns now mostly early picks but even the best premiership sides always had bluecollar /spearcarriers who were vital for success -mick kennedy shane robertson mario bortolotto all come to mind - some of our battlers from the rookie list might just help us to that ultimate prize |

What is wrong with talking up Carlton's eye for talent and getting these quality players for basically nothing. I think it needs to be praised more than anything else actually! You're having everyone on right Pafloyu? |

Remember all the posts upto 2009 criticising our recruiting department? Big pats on the back Hughes & co. I just hope we don't do a stkilda and sit on our laurels. We still need to improve the list wherever possible. Beware of trading away picks for mature players. History suggests that doesn't work. Please recruting department start preparing for life after Judd now. It could be later than we think. Jesus died at 30. |
