TalkingCarlton :: View topic - Open letter to all Carlton players

I have lived in 4 countries and have visited every corner of the globe and this time round I would honestly rate Melbourne as the second most beautiful city in the world (sorry but Paris still trumps us).

Dear Blueboyz

I was at the G yesterday and for the first time in 6 years I was able to see my beloved Blues play. I have to say that I have been very wary of the way we have played the last couple of weeks and thought against Adelaide we beat a team travelling very badly and that we did not win but rather they found a way to lose.

Living in Brazil watching Carlton play is a huge endevour as timezones are pretty much in reverse with day being night and visa versa ... but I never, ever miss a match. Needless to say as I work Saturday and Sundays it is a major pain as I go there dead tired.

There was a small regret in my heart as I realised the only game I would see whilst I was here was the Geelong fixture. But a starving man would never complain about getting a meal of bread and water. So although I thought it would be a tough ask to win, all I really wanted was the boys to put in a good effort and give pride to the jumper. A jumper I would gnaw my own arm off if it meant I could play one game for the Blues!

Well .... all I can say is THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

The first 5 minutes I was particuarly concerned as I thought Geelong opened better than us but geez we played well. I could not fault the endevour of one single Carlton player or the coach for what was truly a magnificent win. There was heart, there was courage and there was passion and intensity.

As Carlton supporters we have been privledged to believe it is our god given right to expect that from the men who pull on our guernsey but sadly through the dark years we were robbed and cheated (although not as badly as the Storm!) of that.

All I can say once again is THANK YOU for letting me witness one of our best efforts over the last 6 years. I am more than grateful that I was able to witness it live and am now seriously considering a return to Australia because of it! (not kidding)

On a side note I think Carlton and Geelong supporters get on really well and was really impressed with every single aspect of the service that the G provided.

To all Melbournians, Melbourne has been transformed into a truly magnificent city over the last 15 years of my absence. Inspirational stuff BB, and a timely reminder that it is the passionate supporter who stands alone as the lifeblood of our great game. Living overseas for prolonged periods unquestionably heightens the senses and increases the craving for those things uniquely Australian, none more truly unique and special of course than Australian rules football. Its not about homesickness but the need for a sense of connection with ones cultural roots. You might have missed the last 6 years live BB but you picked one of the great ones to come back to. We all absolutely loved it as well.

And how lucky we all are to be able to see the team play so often......I travel over from Tassie a couple of times a year to watch the boys but I have never thought about the fans who live Overseas! No doubt they would love to jump on a one hour flight to catch the team play. I'm very pleased you were able to watch such a great game

Post Of The Week BB. Luckily here in Beijing it is only 2 hours in winter so no early morning like you and Blue Sombrero in Mexico. So please that you watched such a great game live. I had my fix for the year with the Tigers game. Safe travelling back to South America. Go Blues!

Thank you for all your positive comments ... as for my choice in favorite cities all I was trying to highlight is how absolutely gobsmacked I am at how Melbourne has changed and how wonderful it has become. The only comment I might sway to agree with is Venice ... a truly beautiful city as well .... whoever has been in charge of Melbourne`s town planning over the last 15 years should get a the key to the city ... forever! There are many things you miss when life takes you away from the place you grew up in but I will say one thing that is absolutely spot on ... We as Australians should be really proud of Aussie rules it has no equal in world sport for all the attributes that we love athletes for ... superb skill, endurance, courage, highs and lows it is a game that I sometimes wonder what could have been if it was invented elsewhere in the world. Not putting other sports down even though I am a one eyed fan but where football stands today and what you have to be to excel at it ... I do not think too many other sports people could switch codes but I do not think the same could be said of our footballers. They are awesome athletes. Yes those that get to see their team week in and week out will always take it for granted until it is taken away from them but the thrill of a good win, watching players take pride in the jumper that so many of us would kill to just wear once and the feel of a hot pie in one hand and a cold beer in the other and screaming "ball" with 40,000 other supporters is something that makes it worth going through thick or thin for the team that you love. Not to mention coming on this forum after a good win to have a gloat with everyone else and a super cry after a dreadful loss. God bless our great game.

I was in the outer surrounded by feral doggies fans who were out in force as they were travelling nicely, the disappoinment on their faces was gold!
