While i agree that he could fire the players up you have to keep in mind that great players dont always make great coaches.
However im sure he would have a lot to offer the club

Just interested in people's opinions about Kouta as a potential assistant coach? I seem to remember a rumour recently that he had approached the club and offered first option for his services - not sure if that's true? - From what any TC'ers know: Does he have tactical insight and would be be a good addition to the brains trust? - Surely he would have the respect of the players and be able to fire them up, harden them up and rebuild a sense of pride in the history and prestige of the club ? - Do you think there's a risk he would entrench the "Old Boys Club" too much? I was just listening to him on the radio, and while he didn't say anything particularly insightful, the first thing he said flat out was that they had no pressure on Saturday, and they need to seriously have a look at themselves. He sounds genuinely serious about the situation, almost exasperated and livid, and there is a clear sound in his voice of desire and determination for the situation to improve. When questioned by Ox if Carlton will change coach if not successful this season, he gave a pretty definitive NO. I note that he has always been pretty steadfastly supportive of Sticks and Ratts, but I just get the feeling he wants to get his hands dirty and make a difference at the club. - Should we / are we holding out an olive branch to the great player to get him an influential role? ala Bradley, Diesel, etc. Or do you think he is too busy posturing in the media? (All jokes about needing a translator for the players to understand his speech aside) |

If SOS came back as a Senior Development Coach and to work wonders with the backline, I would support Kouta being his 2IC, having a role with the 1-3 year players and learning from SOS. |

Taking nothing away from the likes of Ratten, SoS, Kouta, Bradley etc etc............ But why must people here insist on using ex Carlton players as senior coaches. I would like to see outsiders come and to the club as coaches bringing with them fresh ideas that they have learned from other clubs. I want to remember the likes of Ratten and Kouta for the champions they are, not how they failed as coaches for this mighty club !!!! |

You only have to look at a guy like Gavin Brown who's doing the hard yards at Collingwood and is still very much learning about coaching and the proactive vs. reactive processes in the coaches box. Kouta would be expected to serve such an apprenticeship and that's not likely. No reason why he shouldn't come down to the club and help out where he can (e.g mentor to the younger guys), but I don't see that happening any time soon. |

I'd have Peter Dean as out backline coach before SOS. Look how well the Bulldogs backline functions. |

Weve had plenty of outsiders come to the club in the last ten years including a multiple premership coach

Yeah I'll be interested to see how the club rates Lappin at the end of the season. Not sure yet what to make of Henderson's and Setanta's progress. |

Well, apart from one of our development coaches (Darren Harris, ex West Coast 2006-2008) we don't have anyone who's had a coaching role at a club during a successful period (winning finals, consistent top 4). It's one thing being a player in a successful club, but quite another being part of the coaching staff. That, to me, is a huge gap in the collective skill set. |

How old is Kouta? I reckon he could still play. Thought he retired too soon. Get him back as Essendon* did with Tim Watson. Kouta and Judd in the Middle ... sensational.

We'd need a helping hand from science to do so. If you brought him him back for season 2011 he'd be 38. To put that into perspective that's how old Michael Tuck was when he led Hawthorn to the 1991 flag or when Craig Edwin Bradley played his last game for Carlton in 2002.
