Post subject:  The new 'WOOF!'

I know somebody started a thread on this a couple of years ago but the search facility couldn't turn it up using my input. Sorry to the original poster for 'stealing' your idea but I truly would have continued your thread had I been able to find it.

It seems to me we need this as part of our culture. I also know to contrive something that started spontaneously is not easy but surely there is someone on the list who could fit the bill!

Has to be a regular player I suppose.
Has to be a good kick, a long kick preferably.
Should be someone who gets the footy on the ground as well as in marking contests. Val and Ang both played in the back six so maybe that has to be considered.

Can't be Kreuzer, because he already has 'Krooooze'
Can't be Betts because we spontaneously just make excited noise every time he goes near the footy. Same with Judd and Garlett.
Can't be Houla because half the 'supporters' are too busy shouting out that he is a useless girl and besides, he is towards the end of his footy life.
Can't be Bower/Walker because their kicking isn't always too flash.
Could be Scotland but he is probably in the last couple of years also.
Could be Grigg because he does the long raking ones but has yet to prove he will play every week. Plus he's a leftie like the last Woof, Ang. Yes, I know Val was a right-footer.
Could be Simmo because he gets a lot of it and is a good kick.
Could it be Yarran? He is a beautiful kick off both feet and is just starting out and will surely get a game every week soon...
Could it be Hendo
If we can come up with someone and tell all our friends, maybe we can get it off and running this season. Those among you who go to training and see more games than I am able to go to should have some better ideas.
Thoughts?

Ahh...the Woof.

A few big and lesser names have had this over the years (Should Hartlett be added?)...

1981 to 1985: Val Perovic
Mid 1990's: Ang Christou
2005 - 2006: Chris Bryan

Players do not kick it long consistently anymore. Even if we had a big kick in the team most of the time they would be chipping it short to uncontested football which we enjoy today in AFL. Will be funny woofing a 15 meter kick every time

I agree.

Perhaps we could have the new 'POOF'.

When I saw the title of the thread I initially thought it was going to be about ROK. A beautiful, booming left foot seems about right to me (plus it was a natural thought, not a set-up or stretch). If he can get some constant game time over the next year or 2 then I think the WOOF will be back !!!!!!!!!

A few of us did it for Tony "Gladstone Small" Lynn who wore number 15 in 1993.

We had a beer with him in the social club and mentioned his lack of a neck in the sponsors photo and that he had big Val's old number. We agreed to give him a few woofs the next week and meet him in the bar afterwards to see if he heard us.

He said he could hear us - but he didn't play too many games after that so no one else probably remembers unless they stood near us on the wing in front of the Pratt Stand.

After that some guys down near the visitors race started doing it for Ang. It's quite strange watching the Final where Madden had the big run against Adelaide - there are no woofs for Ang in that game.

I also went to a Sydney/Melbourne game in the very early nineties. I was discussing how the crowd reacted to Perovic when one of my mates heard what we were talking about and let rip with a massive “woooooof”. This was about half way through the second quarter of the Ressies. The group in front of us burst into hysterical laughter because the thought it was for the umpire throwing the ball in. They started doing it at each throw in and I'm fairly sure I heard the other week in the Swans NAB cup match.

I don't think any of our current crop deserve it at the moment.

Interesting but the dates don't quite add up. Lynn played pretty much the whole 1994 season, his first season at Carlton. By 1995 Christou was well and truly the "Woof" guy, if he wasn't already in 1994.

The Sydney crowd have been doing that peculiar thing for many years.

As I was reading this post and before reading the reference to the NAB Swans game, I was thinking about the Swans supporters doing the same for the boundary ump. They sure were. Very funny.

You're right about the year - I was thinking about a final where Scholl played & Gladstone missed out - must have been 94.

The Sydney trip was probably 1990 o 91.

It has to be 1994. Maybe with the attempts to transfer the woof to Lynn they ended up attaching to Christou? It's hard to remember but I seem to recall it becoming widespread in 1995 with Ang, not before.

If you want to start afresh with a new player, why not Kane Lucas? A beautiful mover and great kick, he would be perfect.
