The apprenticeship is over. Carlton needs Setanta now. He's been a star forward in Ireland, and I (would like to?) believe that he will be the KEY forward we need inside the arc in 2010. Go you good thing. Kick 60 in 2010.

When was he ever a star forward in Ireland, he played Hurling.

No shit sherlock. As a corner forward. The designated free kick/hit taker. Won the equivalent of the Rising Star and an All-Star. From the day he could walk until he met Denis Pagan, he played forward. It's what works inside his head. He's actually a good kick for goal, he's fast and he's big and he takes a grab. He's a better bet than Hendo for the next two years, that's for sure. And God knows we need him.

Fair enough.

No offence meant, Kezza. It's late and I'm drinking raki. Which is Eastern European for 'petrol'.

No doubt in my mind that Carlos will be the CHF come Round 1 if fit. He showed a heap against quality teams last year in that position, especially the Saints game where he a huge impact.

People expect Harry to take the load so early, well he won't be while Carlos is around, Henderson can learn his trade as a sidekick like he should be at his age.

I wouldn't be opposed to seeing him take the CHF position and make it his own on the bigger grounds with Henderson playing deep. At the Dome or SCG (or Blacktown), I'm in favour of an unconventional CHF like Eddie Betts.

Isnt it weird????

We spend the season shouting to have players dropped or thinking theyre not good enough... and then when theyre not in the team.. we want them back.

This is all clutching at straws....

Its not about Setanta or any individual... its about the style of game were attempting to implement.
The overall game plan and drilling .. and the structures are all wrong.

Were caught up in believing its about the players as individuals... but in fact its about your development and your structures and how you drill your footballers to cope with whats going on on the field....
... Its about how theyre prepared individually sure.. but more importantly collectively as one.

Our players play like theyre playing at the park.

And Ratts has a definite problem switching footbalers minds on for business.
It happended alot last year where we couldnt play with any real intensity when a game was winnable or had to be won.. or quarters.

Setanta is not the answer to our situation...
... not cos he cant play... im a fan... but because we are not playing as a unit combining to make Setantas role.. or anyone elses role doable.

We waste way too much time flicking balls around with meaningless intent.
Usually the guys you dont want distributing the ball are the ones on the end of a chain of handballs that have gone nowhere.

Its flawed...!!!

The coaching staff just arent up to the requirements of the modern game... theyre probably 4 years behind.

sorry Synbad, but it's a bit blah blah blah, to be honest.
if you've played footy, which i assume you have, you realise the absolute difference it makes to your side when one or two of your key players are not there. we'll do well to be 1-2 without judd with this draw this year because HE'S KEY. With or without Ratten or Bomber Thompson or Alistair Clarkson or Jesus Christ as coach.
We need a forward line. Hawthorn did it around two talls, the Doggies have done it around none. Our forward line will be what it will be. I see Setanta and Waite as our key targets (I think Jamison, Bower - on what he's showed recently - and Thornton can handle most sides' talls down back). When Kreuzer's "resting", I'd like to see him on a forward flank, so he can run into that 25-40 metres out position and be the big man marking over the top, and otherwise run like he stole something, Gibbs, Houlihan and Murph to take the shots on the run from 40, and Betts and Yarran to be the X-men inside.
But as targets, it's Setanta and Waite, for mine. I think they're key. I think you'd be a lot less pissed off if they'd played today. We'll see.

I've just read three threads Synbad and you have said the same thing in all of them. I think you have made your point. Over, over and over again.
This thread is not about Ratts or the coaching staff, it's about a player.

As for Irish I hope and pray he is used as our permanant tall forward. He has played more games than most in our forward line and has shown some great signs last year, before fev put a knee in his back. Waite is the other who will spend time up there but he will be used more down back, and on the wing.

Synbad get another thing to focus your attention on. Your going to have an aneurysms concentrating on one thing for sooooooooo long.

I know this isn't the topic of the thread but I like the idea of Eddie at CHF at smaller grounds. I'd like to take it a step further and have a half forward line of Yarran, Betts and Garlett. All are creative, quick and good kicks of the footy. They either create space behind them by dragging an opposition player in their wake or have time and space to create something if they mark uncontested in space.

Interesting idea at any rate.
