No online link but check out today's Adelaide Sunday Mail (pg 56)

Who's Coasting

It's the hot topic both here and across the border - just how many footballers are signed to the new Gold Coast franchise without their current club knowing?
Names were recklessly thrown about by various media outlets during the week with Western Bulldog Adam Cooney and Adelaide's Patrick Dangerfield (pictured) top of the list.
While the heat seems to have come off talented Dangerfield in particular, take it from us, a new Carlton Blue is already signed to the Gold Coast.

hhmmm ... I wonder ...

Does Grigg count as new?

Jacobs perhaps. Or maybe someone who plays in Adelaide for a team that wears blue.

.........or nobody.

Likely candidates are Browne, Anderson, Grigg & Johnson. How does the compensation system work? Because if where they were originally taken is a factor, them snapping up Grigg could work out nicely for us.

Anderson & Johnson are all but gone so it's no loss. If we've let them get near Austin or O'Keeffe we're idiots.

I have no idea how the compensation system works, but I'd bet practically everything I own that clubs who get players poached by GC will receive unders for the players.

Why would they want Anderson and Johnson (especially)? I could see them chasing Browne, Grigg, Austin though.

I suppose it all depends on what they mean by "new".

I'd be filthy if Austin has signed. Although, we'd have brought it on ourselves by not playing him. He seemed to be heavily out of favour last season.

Hopefully there was nothing to it and he wasn't disillusioned to the point of wanting to leave.

List depth. Anderson is an NT boy and they might feel he can be re-invigorated by a move much closer to home. Johnson offers them foot skills and a balanced wingman.

Jacobs (who is new to the senior list) would be the one...not surprising that this might have popped up in a South Australian newspaper first with the kid being South Australian...if Ricky Nixon knows that Shaun Hampson and family are committed to Melbourne (and hence Carlton) then he would have been in Sam's ear about how he's still ruck option #4 at the Blues and that an opportunity to increase his playing time and bank balance is available at Gold Coast...couldn't blame him, but for what it's worth - my opinion is that this kid will be an extremely talented ruckman and if I had my way - I'd keep him.

Austin was injured last year.

Bower, Thornton, Waite and Jamison were keeping him out of the team.

Oz had the same post-season operation as Jamison.

He's injured ATM, but there will be a spot for him with Fevola gone.

And Fisher injured last night.

I'd be happy if it was Jacobs. I think the kid will be a good tap ruckman if he gets a regular game, but he will remain 4th string at Carlton unless we get injuries so he should take whats on offer.

What an absolutely scummy way to set up a club by Demitrispew and co at AFL House.

Can't believe clubs agreed to it (if they did), and that the clubs haven't called for Demitispew's head on a stick over it.

I like Doc Sherrin's theory and the likelihood of us keeping Kreuzer, Hampson, Warnock and Jacobs long term is always going to be low. Apart from Kreuzer the rest have would have tradeable stamped on their papers.

I also agree that GC17 having the ability to sign players on the sly is about as [REDACTED] as [REDACTED] gets.

Footy sucks sometimes.

10 Years? All they need is a very good spine - which I have no doubt they'll get and then surround themselves with the best kids born in 1992. There are a 5 in my opinion who would have been eligible in last years draft that will be absolute guns. 4 years before they're serious contenders.

If we only lost Jacobs out of the GC concessions as an "out of contract" player then that would be a win in my book.

Not happy about it but when you think that we could lose a Gibbs, for example, then its not the end of the world for me.

But he's hardly "new" though :?

Another could be Peter Labi. He's "new" and not contracted as such. Though i'm not sure how his situation works with the scholarship.

I could suffer losing Grigg, but I'll be livid if we let Jacobs go.

There will be enough football excitment for them to justify what they have done

But there won't be a gold coast flag this decade - there will be a few finals appearances though.

Really would not want to lose Sam Jacobs .
He's way ahead of Hampson and Warnock in the ruck stakes at the moment !!
