We all know that we acquired Judd from West Coast for Pick 3 (Chris Masten), Pick 20 (Tony Notte) & Josh Kennedy.
Why is it that everyone forgets that we also got Pick 46 (Denis Armfield) in the deal?

Every time JK or Masten plays a game full of promise, everyone harks back to 'The Deal', yet when Armfield quietly goes about his business with aplomb, why do we not hear every commentator stating how well Carlton has performed in this negotiation?

Let's hope they pick up on it soon, as we notonly landed the best player in the competition, but a young guy with speed and a penchant for taking the game on, who will be a major contributor with us for the better part of a decade.

Great post barrel.

So true.

Thanks for the reminder.

I'm an Armfield fan.

I think people seem to forget we got Judd in the trade. The amount of times you hear 'how handy would JK be right now?' - probably not as handy as Judd you'd think

If you asked me before the deal I would have given my left nut to see Judd in Navy Blue.....never loved an opposition player as much as Juddy

in a non gay way

But Barrell, you make a good point. The other failure in logic, is that it is a good chance we wouldn't have taken Masten and Notte anyway

I'd like to think of it as one of those win win situations.

I must admit that I watch the Eagles with a tinge of sadness as I really rated JK, but I also think that moving to the Eagles has helped his development.

It hasn't been easy developing as a tall forward during the Fev era. The Weagles have been developing and using him as the go to Tall, but he wouldn't have been that for us until this season. For all that I would really have loved to have kept him, I'm not sure he would be the player he is now, and looks like becoming, if he had stayed with us. He had so many fans on his back before he left as well and confidence is such a big thing in football.

Wins all round in the end IMO

Win, win, especially with Armfield who is now a regular senior player. Love the way he throws himself into the play.

..it's simple.. ..Army isn't included much cos he's a BP/HBF which don't rate as mich as prime mids or KPP's.. ..also, even Notte was a pick 20, Army in the 40's by memory..??.. ..but often it's not so much the star power, but what the players give to their club, and what said clubs need.. ..i think it was a fair trade, as fair as it could be..

Just imagine if we knew what was coming and was able to use Fev in the Judd deal instead of JK !!!!!!!!!!!! It would have been close to a fair swap of players, with probably an improvement of the WCE's 2nd rd pick. Something like

Eagles. Judd + #35.
Carlton. Fev + #20.

Remember Fev would have been what, 26 yrs old (about the prime for a KPF), won the Coleman in 2006, the WCE would have still had a quality list having just played finals (despite losing x2 elite midfielders) and having Fev would have meant no fall down the ladder. A star KPF for a star Midfielder who nominated Carlton would have been a pretty even deal.

It would have meant that we kept Kennedy (who would become our focal point), probably picked up Palmer with #3 (although the fact we just got Judd into the midfield and lost Fev may have meant we would have gone for the best KPF with #3, ala HENDERSON) and someone with #35 (not sure who here .......). We probably would have also had a slightly better positioning in the 2008 draft (may have gone for Hurley but the club has said they prefered Yarran anyway) and NitNat wouldn't have done to the Eagles (prob be at the Dockers instead)

Oh it's fun to speculate !!!!!!!!! lol

Its a win win trade as far as I'm concerned based on the picks used.

Had the trade not gone through though I wouldnt have used pick 3 on masten and 20 on notte - particularly with the benefit of hindsight (rioli+otten)

rioli+otten+kennedy would cancel out judd+armfield imo

West Coast didn't get pick one.

Carlton wins.

WC wouldnt have accepted a Judd/Fev trade.

If talking hypotheticals...
we could have not done the trade and picked up kreuzer+rioli+otten for that draft whilst keeping kennedy

When Fev stuffed up we'd still have henderson+mclean

And given that we'd have rioli, we might have passed on yarran and picked up rich.

End result we'd have
kennedy+henderson+kreuzer+rioli+otten+mclean+rich to go with murphy, gibbs etc

otten+rich+mclean+murphy+gibbs+others would cover our midfield needs

rioli+betts+garlett would cover our small forwards

kennedy+kreuzer+henderson would cover our keyforward needs (and potentially keybacks if henderson was played back)

all theoretical fun and games - we've got judd so thats all that needs to be worried about :)

As good as Juddy is, we gave up too much for him.
The fact that Worsfold nearly destroyed his career by playing him injured and knowing too well he was on the move, was a disgrace as well, but no-one mentions this at all. Caroline Wilson is too busy with other "exclusives". :hitcomputer:

Gee I thought we had made a big trade to get Armfield and Judd was a sweetener.
Truely though...hi hopes for army this year. Walked past him before the intraclub and he looked really annoyed that he wasn't out there. Great competitor who throws everything into the contest!

Blah blah blah, coulda woulda shoulda

If only l put money on shocking at the melbourne cup l would of won :P

Even if Kennedy and Masten turn out to be great players, l still would of wanted the judd deal to happen. he has helped the development of the young players a lot more quickly and his onfield leadership is secound to none. To date Kennedy/Masten haven't done anything and even if they do, l wouldn't change a thing. Can't beat bringing the best player to your team and leadership.

Deals done, move on, don't look back.

*bump*

Judd's loss has given the Eagles wings, says Worsfold
Michael Gleeson wrote:
Was Judd the right man for Carlton at the stage of its cycle?

Did he help the Blues advance too rapidly?

That is doubtful for Carlton had endured several bottoming-out years before Judd arrived.

The difficulty in comparing the two clubs' experiences and timing was that Carlton's list was so poor and depleted its process of regeneration has taken longer. It has improved but is still pot-holed.

Now, of course, matters are complicated by the Fevola trade - which could well be the deal Carlton reflects on in two years as having been the critical exchange with long-term benefit.
