AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou last night confirmed to The Age that a rugby league scenario now exists in Australian rules football whereby players such as Gary Ablett and Trent Cotchin could play for Geelong and Richmond respectively in 2010 while already contractually committed to the Gold Coast for 2011.

In Big Footy someone said that he was offered a big contract, but is opting to stay with us for less. Not sure of the reliability of this poster.

No doubt they spoke to Gibbs , as also there'd be no doubt they approached Kreuzer. Gold Coast wouldn't be doing their job if they hadn't.

But it's much harder to get AFL players to move clubs than in other football codes.

On top of that, we undeniably have significantly good prospects over the next few years, so enticing someone away would be even more difficult.

On top of that, we're all such lovely people at Carlton that it would be impossible to leave. :smoking:

I think we are all going to have to accept that we are going to lose someone. every team is going to. it sucks big time. bit like russian roulette. Just got to hope that the player you lose is coverable. For example (and don't shoot me down cos I don't want it to happen) if we were to lose Hammer it wouldn't be so bad because we have 4 capable ruckmen on our list. I'd hate it but I could live with it. Losing Bryce, however, would totally [REDACTED] because he is integral to our midfield

This is all @#$%&! North Melbourne's fault. I hope they go under in the very near future

I tell you what, if he's asked to play that dick around "quarterback" role this year, then we'd have wasted him and he may as well go. Jobs like that are for capable retreads like Scotland and Johnson. Bryce Gibbs ought to be a scoring threat when he has the footy.

there is another thread that's discussing Greg Swann on SEN stating that Carlton are very close to finalising a deal with Bryce.

what will be interesting will be the AFL's "rating" system that will determine the compensation clubs get. seriously has bullshit written all over it

there is a rumour that Gold Coast has started negotiations with 6-8 players out of those that they have targetted. If this is true then from the 16 clubs there will be a few that lose players. Most likely players who have good solid reputations and see this as a chance to cash in and who see diminished opportunities in the future at their existing clubs.

Let's hope for the sake of the game that it doesn't happen Shezza. I know its the opposition and it doesn't matter to us, but it just wouldn't seem right seeing someone like Gary Ablett playing for GC, along with many of the other star players of the league that are iconic to their club.

I can see this new Gold Coast team becoming the "spoilt brat" of the league.

For something to be new, it does not have to have a predecessor.

I've said from the start that smart clubs could use the GC situation to their advantage. Yes, we may lose a star (either for peanuts or a decent draft pick) but we may also be able to deal a few players that are mid-tier, or need a change of environment, but would help GC depth-wise (they can't have all guns in their team). We can get screwed out of this, or we can do well if we play our cards right.

Serious, why ?

They surely wont go after him will they. I would be surprised if he would let that it, even if he did. He is trying to establish himself in the team, why would he alleniate the team to say that.

No idea if that's true, but he'd probably fit the profile of the kind of player who'd want to move.

A Gibbs, Murphy, Kruezer... they're already established as young guns and are an important cog at the club they're at: so they'll get looked after no worries. Their status is assured.

But Grigg... at Carlton, he'll be a support act. At Gold Coast, he can achieve an elevated status and paypacket that would probably make him feel all warm and fuzzy and loved to death.

Personally I reckon there'd be a heap of players who'd be more than happy to double their money and live on the Gold Coast. I don't think GWS will enjoy the same levels of enthusiasm.
