What opposition players over the years had always turned it on against us, or against one of our players that they would always match up on? The two that come to mind straight away are Sean Denham, and Maxi Hudghton. Firstly to Denham, who would always match up on Diesel and get right under his skin. Williams would be such an effective player against us in other games but a lot of the time against Essendon* he would be contained to the point of frustration against Denham. Loved it however when Diesel kicked the sealer in a match against the Scum though, I think it was 1995 (anyone able to clarify?) and he had the last laugh. Secondly to Maxi, who would get under Fevola's skin quite a bit, using some typical backman tactics to the point where Fev would explode. I can remember several times where Fevola had a gutfull and would go on to do some very stupid things through the frustration caused by Maxi. A few examples include the laughing, hugging, joking with the Saints blokes after we had lost in 2008, and when Fev got dragged in about 2004/05, went to the bench to go on the phone to Denis, and had basically hung up in his ear. I'm sure there are many others. Thoughts? ![]() |

Richmond ruckman Michael Green was BOG in the 1969 Grand Final and was one of the few to ever dominate against Nicholls. Earlier in the 1960's Richmond ruckman Neville Crowe of always played solidly against Big Nick which was a major achievment in itself. |

Great thread. The one player that stands out to me is Mark Mercuri. He would carve us up time and time again. I'll throw in Mick McGuane as well who used to expose Diesel's lack of speed in the big games. |

Peter Riccardi, Remember the game at Telstra (not sure on the year but I'll say around 2004), my young bloke hadn't seen a Carlton win live at this stage and said to me near the end of the game " we'll get to sing the song today dad". Then Cats resurge, Riccardi gets the ball around 50 and wobbles through a mungril which we reckon was touched anyways. Tears all around, mostly from me seeing how upset the young fella was. ![]() |

Towards the end of his career he fell down a bit though, partially due to his brother's death that had an impact on him. The year was 2002. I remember watching on a tiny TV set at home, and I can recall how excited I was when Lappin got a free right in front of goals and put us in front. The commentary even said something along the lines of "The Blues are gonna win the game". |

You can almost say that Neal Daniher had our measure as both a player and a coach. When he coached Melbourne they would mostly always lift and beat us. |

Luke Darcy. When Scott Wynd was still playing and Darcy played mostly forward. Would normally be matched up on by Sexton and always kicked a bag. |
