There used to heaps of chants flying out of the chearsquad back in the day at Princess park that you just couldn't get away with nowadays....

Ones like:

Everytime the cops walked past you would get: "Ned Kelly is a mate, is a mate, is a mate, Ned Kelly is mate caus' he killed coppers".....Also "What is the colour of a 2 cent coin, Copper, Copper.."

Then when someone missed there was something along the lines of: "Ohhhh he missed he's got VD clap clap, clap clap.."


There were so many more....Can anyone remember them???

The one I have in mind involves using a person's name. So, as the example, let's just use Lloyd.

When Rodney Ashman was Carlton's best player in the late 70s, he had the audacity to wear a bike helmet on the field.
He could be an angry ant at times, and I do remember him remonstrating with the umpire during at a throw in on the wing at Princes Park, after he had been slung into the fence.
His argument with the umpire was holding up play, when some wag in the outer yelled out 'on yer bike Ashman!'
The crowd percolated with laughter, then the players joined in, and even the umpire.
Ashman was particularly riled, and threw his helmet onto the ground in disgust, which only added to the merriment.
For a short moment the battle was reduced to a playground, and we all kids.
A few weeks later I was at the ground and Ashman was starring and some wag yelled out 'on yer bike Ashman!'. It must have been a Carlton supporter.
The memory of the past weeks incident was revived and casual chant started up... "on yer bike (bang, bang) Ashman!"
This time he laughed.

I remember a match in the mid 1990's at Princes Park against the Dogs. It must have been the first minute or so and Rohan Welsh went up for a screamer, ina pack, and I think brought it down to raucous applause. As the pack cleared Scotty Wynd was at the bottom of the pack and hadnt moved. I remember yelling out in joy of the mark "Great mark, and you've killed their best player too" which got a few laughs and snorts.

But Wynd did not move.

At all.

It must have taken 5 minutes for them to get him off the field - the game hung in this eery quiet whilst Scott Wynd did appear to have died.

The Dogs took the game without him from memory and my call was keenly felt all match!

Seriously, when a player from another team lines up for goal, and they rip out those giant pom poms or whatever the @#$%&! they are, I cringe. How is something so corny meant to put off another player?

QFT_ which is why I advocate the return of the dunny roll (preferably Sorbent) and confetti. At least, they do some harm to the opposition.....

I remembered another one today... This one was always led by that guy who used to always get in trouble and eventualy banned ( I think he wore a white suit to a GF)??

Everywhere we go oh, people wanna no oh, where we come from, so we tell them, we come from Carlton, mighty mighty Carlton... Something like that but it seemed much longer.... And alway seemed to start at 3qtr time if a recall correctly.

I never used to go to games all the time, but every now I would go and sit in the cheersquad and have a ball...Yea there were some weirdos in there, there were all sorts to tell you the truth, but the main thing was that we were all united and on common ground thanks to the mighty Blues. It was a unity that some people could only find at the footy, which is what made it enjoyable and addictive for so many supporters....
