You can not be serious. Was it really the lead story in the broadcast? if so thats a disgrace (it being the lead in story) But have to say it's a good get by Swan and co and its pleasing to see (even though it might not eventuate) that such a high profile company as Masterfoods/Mars wants to be affiliated with our great club. The times have changed. Let's hope Swan and co can talk them round. |

Food for thought. i'd be surprised if the Mars organisation would be interested sponsoring on a significant basis ie target market is too narrow to be investing large $. However, they are made up of 3 independent businesses in Oz - sauces/condiments, confectionery and Petfood. Perhaps the 3 divisions have got together. Masterfoods (condiments, sauces etc) wouldn't have the marketing spend to throw at it (ie they turn over $300 million per annum and profits are not gold standard!!). An independent association would be a very small one. Mars confectionery makes reasonable profits - however a large sponsorship of a single footy club doesn't make sense ie too narrow against the target audience. Besides the decision maker for Mars confect is a mad, mad Saints supporter. Perhaps they maybe be interested in 'promotional' one offs similiar to their previous association ie Mars M&M's. Mars Petfood hasnt been mentioned on the news - might be some consideration. Much bigger business than the other two in the portfolio, with revenues of approx $800 million. Pets? maybe some value. Interestingly one of the 'spins' Mars petfood has used over the years is to include employees and their favourite pet on the label of some of their brands. Perhaps we might see Juddy and his cat on the back of a 'chicken and rice' meal or maybe the Krooz and his favourite great Dane on the back label of some liver treats??????? ![]() ![]() Consumer brands and footy associations tend to be very narrow unless you can have some stake at the AFL competition level. Mars will only make it happen if they could co-ordinate some interesting and complex marketing intiatives that could work across their multiple divisions. |

Taken from The Age website: Blues deny booze-cruise lost it a sponsor Quote: WHILE acknowledging that the alcohol-fuelled antics of players might have made potential sponsors coy, Carlton last night downplayed suggestions that it had ''lost'' a million-dollar deal with confectionery giant Mars.
Channel Nine news said that Mars, which has been in talks with Carlton as a possible replacement sponsor for the Malaysian government, had withdrawn. This followed the late December ''booze cruise'' that led to the exiling from the senior team of three players, Eddie Betts, Ryan Houlihan and Andrew Walker. A club spokesman said while some potential sponsors obviously had ''paused'' after the incident, talks were still continuing with several sponsors, and that it was not the case that it had ceased speaking to Mars. The spokesman said that Carlton could not be said to have ''lost'' a sponsor as a result of its off-field mishap because it had not signed one in the first place. |

Yet some people on this site fail to understand the realities player behaviour has on a club these days. Now for the AFL's turn to bend us over. |

Did anyone forget that Mars used to tip plenty of money into Channel 9, particularly via the Footy Show? This has something to do with Ed, but more to do with their coffers... |
