Jeff Garlett has really impressed me with the way he has gone about his transition into footy at an elite level. Take into account his weight and overall size, and it is absolutely remarkable. I have him earmarked to come on in leaps and bounds in 2010, and I'm sure he will. However, I am just wanting to put a question out there. Given his slim build, do you think he is naturally meant to be that way? Will his body allow him to build more muscle? If all is done to build on his light frame and it turns out that his body is genetically like that, will he be able to stand up to the on-going rigors of elite level footy for a long period of time? Don't get me wrong, I am not doubting his ability to play AFL footy, I think he will be a star for our club, and he boasts talent, illustrated in his debut year. Just a few questions.

Thoughts?

Apparently Danny Frawley was quoted as saying he was Buddy Franklin's cousin...

Seriously though...he has the capacity to add a little more muscle. Think Michael Long when he first arrived at Windy Hill. He can fill out - that'll come as he gets a little older. He won't get thrown around too much down forward this year...I expect him to play 10-15 games in Navy Blue this year.

Yup, Michael Long has filled out alright. But I don't think Garlett needs to go quite this far

Good parallel though

He will fill out a bit in the next couple of years . Needs plenty of gym work .

I reckon we'll see plenty of him in 2010 .

..not so much about body size, some big bodies break down, and you'll get the skinny players being quite durable.. ..Simmo and Lappin managed, as have other skinny types..

he'll always be a little wiry sort of bloke, a bit ilke skinny lappin.

wont ever really bulk up to much, but i can see him adding 8-10 kgs over hios carrer.

he's still under 70 kgs aint he? thats tiny for an AFL footballer.

I like him. He's got good skills and pace but more than than he has a good football brain. He seems to know where to run and what to do with the ball when he gets it. Instinctive. Cant buy that. I know the big raps are on Yarran, but in comparing their relative games so far he gets much more of the ball.

As most body builders know, putting on muscle is 70% nutrition and 30% heavy weight resistance training. He can be in the gym all he likes but unless he's taking in enough protein calories he wont get anywhere. Like most of the other under-developed young guys he will already be on whey protein powders, creatine, glutamate and various other supplements to augment his diet. This takes time. I hope they stick with him, good football brains are hard to come by.

I like the way he plays his footy.

I'd also like to see a good role-model for the young indigenous players we're assembling at Visy Park. I think it's no secret that a fair percentage of indigenous players have come from backgrounds that are quite different to their teammates... and having a older, wiser head around the club who's been there/done that could be quite useful.

As it currently stands, the most senior indigenous influence at the club is Eddie Betts.

I'm sure Syd Jackson is there to talk to if required.

Kade Simpson started out a little fella and his footy smarts and attacking flair has got him through to now.

Jeffy also has that same attacking flair but also a natural goal sense which makes him a super prospect.

An opposition hard man from the 80's (don't remember who) said the tackle that hurt most in his career came from a bag of bones called Ken Hunter.

He is easily over 70 now. He came to the club somewhat skinny because he was living out of a car eating sweet FA not too long ago.

Regular diet, professional monitoring and gym work has done wonders in a little over 12 months. I look forward to how much better he will be next year, and then the year after. An even bigger find than T-Bird, Jamison and Eddie Betts, IMO.

..big call, cos all three players are woefully under-rated.... ..not actually disagreeing with you though, what Errol showed in that dee's win last year was brilliant, hadn't seen repeat front and square crumbing like that over a single game in years..

Then you'll be disgusted to know that I think he'll turn into a winger.

..a winger..?.. ..are you thinking of the old-fashioned winger position..?.. ..i reckon nowadays the wing is where you put an extra mid/on-baller.... ..he'll need to really develop his engine, though that awesome run down the wing to set up one of fev's 9 vs tuggers last year showed he can easily do it.. .... ..it's just that brilliant crumbing, and even better defensive pressure is what he's got by the truckload.... ..also, i'm not a huge fan of players being turned/groomed into other positions when all their natural/instinctive footy ability has them elsewhere ya dig..

I think he's a natural wingman, but in terms of his time at the club he'll be a small forward turning into a winger.

..that's interestin', why do you think natural winger..?.. ..his time here, and what little i saw/heard of him pre-draft and he seemed more a fwd/hff.... .... ..also, are you thinking the more traditional type wingman, or the modern type..?.. .... ..i recall a heap of criticism levelled at stevens cos he wasn't hard enough, and i would consider him the archetypal winger.. ..but today's game doesnt seem to utilise the wing position as it once was ya dig..
