We've noticed this name pop up in a few Carlton documents, particularly from the 1960's and 1970's.

My father worked at Carlton from the mid 1970's, I'll ask him today & he can speak to his mate Kenny who was a trainer & property steward from the mid 60's.

Father Briglia was a Catholic priest in Carlton, who fulfilled the role of club chaplain.
My father remembers him but said he never spoke to him.
Apparently Father Briglia was of Italian descent and was short in stature.

Kenny will probably know some more detail, I'll get back to you.

Father Briglia passed away just after Easter in 2000. The boys wore black armbands in our Round 8 game versus Sydney at Princes Park I believe. Fr. Briglia was a well known Labor voter during the 50's and 60's, when it was customary for clergymen to vote for the DLP. He was described as a man of great loyalty who loved to talk. He was the son of a professional Italian violinist and his mother was Irish. He was well known for his work assisting migrants who arrived after the war and became close friends with George Harris while Harris was the honorary dentist at Carlton, and served as Chaplain while Harris was President.

I think he might have been attached to St Abrose in Sydney Road.

Amongst his other duties was as the Chaplain at Pentridge Jail.

IIRC he spent time with Ronald Ryan prior to his death.

For those that may not know Ryan was the last man put to death in Victoria.

Here is some information from Ken Kleiman, who was property steward at Carlton for over 30 years.

Father Brigalia was the priest at a church in Royal Pde. If you are heading from Princes Park towards the city, the Church is on the right, just past Macarthur Rd., opposite the University. Father Brigalia's brother was the club doctor & my father thinks that his name was John.

Kenny says that Father Brigalia enjoyed drinking the free alcohol :clap: , and that he attened all the social functions - which by my childhood recollections is not dissimilar to all the men who worked at Carlton! :smile: Lot's of late nights in the rooms and in the social club throughout our childhoods. :thumbsup:

I would say Kenny's information is 100% spot on. So thanks Ken, and happy birthday for today, Christmas Day. :thanks:

I'll look up the name of the church in my Melways.
