Hey all, apologies if this is being discussed elsewhere.

Like many here I am an interstate supporter who only gets to Melbourne a handful of times each year to see the Mighty Blues play live. For that reason the Silver Long Distance 5 club membership is best suited for me at $117.

I'm interested though in thoughts of the new Club 17 membership upgrade for $195 which 'guarantees you the opportunity to purchase a Grand Final ticket when Carlton participates'. It may be a touch optimistic to think that Carlton will be playing in the 2010 Grand Final but I reckon that Hawthorn fans would have thought the same thing prior to the 2008 season.

I'm interested in two things..

1. How hard it is to purchase a Grand Final ticket if you don't have a membership package that guarantees you a ticket?
2. Would you pay nearly $200 (not including the cost of the actual ticket) for a guaranteed opportunity to attend the Grand Final?

I'm undecided at the mo.

tit the two words that you should be concerned about is 'guarantees you the opportunity to purchase a Grand Final ticket when Carlton participates'

Club 17 doesn't guarantee you a ticket but rather the opportunity to go into a ballot to be selected to then purchase tickets.

Keep in mind that the $195 is in addition to your normal membership fee (unless I misunderstood the membership info).

if you put the $200 aside every year and use it to buy a GF ticket from a scalper if carlton makes it, you'd be better off. Unless we make the next 3 then you're screwed

It's a hard one huh. My reading of the Club 17 description is that you are guaranteed to be able to buy a Grand Final ticket if Carlton are playing if you have the upgrade.

Do you know for sure that there is a ballot for Club 17 people to be selected to purchase Grand Final tickets? If that is the case what's the point of the Club 17 upgrade as my understanding is that it's pretty much a lottery anyway if you want to buy a Grand Final ticket without a membership that guarantees you the privilege.

Ah. I've just picked up the 2010 membership booklet. It says, 'This new optional extra package is available to all membership categories and guarantees you the option of purchasing a Grand Final ticket should the Club participate.'

Yeah I'm aware of that. That's why I thought I'd put it out there and see what people thought. Silver Long Distance 5 membership ($117) + Club 17 upgrade ($195) = $312.

Would it not be easier to simply wait around the MCG until three quarter time when the gates are opened?

You can then take someone's seat of an opposition supporter who is leaving the ground in disgust as their team is getting belted by 10+ goals...

Not too sure even if this is possible - but I have heard over the years that ground staff open the gates at three quarter time.

You're better off just buying a captain's club membership, surely...

If you're on the ball you get the same opportunity to buy a ticket anyway...

$195 + the cost of GF ticket...

geez. Expensive gamble
