Carlton is in the middle of an election in which three directors - Adrian Fletcher, Mark Harrison and Marcus Clark - are facing the members, with former social club director Michael Spartels challenging in a bid to dislodge one of the incumbents.

He is a successful business man, we need someone who is running a big business like Visy - It doesnt matter who owns it.

He just so happens to be in the Pratt family - bonus. Lets not be precious every club gets money from somewhere and we need it.

Just as long as they have other income sources as well - we need both.

Good on the family for staying involved, they love the club.

Why is the number of members an issue anyway ? As long as they all work harmoniously for the good of the club, then the more the merrier I say. Different angles and sources.

If he wishes to join the board, he should do the democratic thing and run at the election.

Very arrogant and dismissive of the membership, IMO.

Well Josh, if that's the feeling of the movers and shakers at Carlton towards the democratic process and it's respect for grassroots members, the club can shove their memberships up their ars*s.

If it's true, then I wonder how cultural change is really going at the club. Make no mistake, I'm grateful for the Pratt family's contribution over the decades, and particularly Richard's efforts after all the dark times. But I hope the energy of Greg Swann reflects what's really going on culturally, and that complacency is not setting in at board level.

At first when reading the headline I thought it was the Son in Law who is a born and bred Collingwood supporter and Board member. Reading on, it's the Carlton side of the family. I know nothing about him, but the fact that Jeannie is still a passionate patron of the club and the son in law continues the tradition of the Pratt legacy, then the decision to offer him a position on the board is one of continuity (of the Pratt legacy) and what I assume is a factionless Director. I give the decision the Long live the Carlton Blues.

Given that Richard Pratt didn't leave the club any money in his Will - the continued association with Visy is imperative to our short-medium term future. Another thumbs up for Ruffy joining the board.

The board is to be big and needs a fair bit of pruning. I am hoping with his arrival that it coincides with at least 2-3 departures.

Presumably the board invited him to become a member, he didn't ask. This allows the board to include people that will make a significant contribution without requiring them to campaign. I've got no problem with that because in 3 years he'll face the members. Democracy is overrated. it give us Kevin Rudd. Enough said.

Three words Mrs Cazz.. build a proverbial. Thank god the club can attract people of the quality of Raph. It would be an embarrassment when an upstanding candidate like him has to run for an election against the likes of Spartels. The truth is every organisation in the world bends the rules to get the best people in the most important positions as efficiently as possible.

Molsey's right... You're going a bit overboard here, there's a democratic element to it, but at the end of the day it's a business, and the members are not its shareholders. There needs to be a capacity to remove and bring on board people outside the voting process. It works both ways.
