Jarrad Waite started his Carlton career mainly playing up forward, where he has kicked some bags. However he has been inconsistent.

He has had success recently playing in defence, where he has excelled as the third man up, and shown himself to be a great rebounder.

Many Carlton fans over the years have theorised that his great athleticism, and good skill below his knees for a big man; would see him play well on the wing in a free roaming capacity.

And for a left field option, I've thrown in the option of playing him in the ruck, à la Paddy Ryder.

Assuming he gets back to full fitness next season, where would you play Waite?

I don't want to sound like a fence sitter but it depends on who we are playing and team injuries etc. I like the idea of him being a running defender though who pinch hits in the forward line.

Forward for mine.

With Fev gone, I think we'll need some experience up forward.

Waite's confidence has improved due to his stint in defence, and he has looked a lot better up forward recently than he did earlier in his career.

I reckon this improved confidence will translate to better consistency.

He can hold down either FF or CHF, so he provides us with flexibility in finding his key position forward foil.

If we can find, or develop another key position forward with such flexibility, they can both rotate between FF, and CHF; and give opposition defenders baaaad headaches.

I think we've got defence covered with Thornton, Jamison, and Austin. Plus maybe Henderson, and O'hAilpin.

Waite can always be thrown back during a match if needed, but I reckon he'll do more damage up forward if we can keep him there.

Waite's biggest issue when up forward was an inconsistent work-rate and poor tackling. Both of those have improved out of sight with his stint in defence.

With a complete lack of traditional FF options, Jarrad is the man.

I'd have him as a HFF. Let him roam up the ground a bit, can even float down back when he feels the need. I think a role similar to Richo's on the wing, except i'd play him a little closer to goals than that. More or less the same style of play tho. Wouldn't play him as a KP forward, FF & CHF have fairly distinct roles in the team & are crucial to the teams structure. I wouldn't ask Waite to play in that manner. I'd much prefer him to have more freedom out on the field. The same principle tells me he was better suited to playing loose in the backline (or at least peeling off the 3rd forward) rather than matching up 1 on 1 against the monster forwards.

Anywhere as required....middle, foward or back....we need to build around him being the joker of the team....we can't afford to have to play him in one particular spot....

If he's 100% fit , he'll play at CHB 90% of the time .

An occasional spree in the forward half to upset opposition match-ups . But mainly CHB , his best position .

..i picked fwd, and while he can play key position, i reckon he's much better when he's got freedom to roam, and play instinctively, versus being more defined and having structural responsibility.... ..CHF should rightfully be given to Hendos in my opinion, and FF i'd play Krooz if Knockers comes good [??'s], otherwise i reckon the big Setant' could go ok. as FF too.. ..for me Waitey left to wreak havoc across the HHF, a great lead-up target, he can also help out the mids/wingers, and run back with the flight of the ball to mark inside 50 as well.... ..

DUC reckons he was on crutches thismorning at training. Shattering.

I voted midfield (wing) based on similar theory I guess. I think he can be a great link player because he is such a hard match up a la Richo ..... effective because he will outmark his direct opponent 9/10 and cover the ground/carry the ball thru midfield; but also have the ability to drift fwd and take a big grab near goal; or drift back & help out/shore up the defence when it is under pressure. We might occassionally get hurt by his direct opponent but I think you have to back Waitey to be more damaging than his opponent.

The exact team structure used will determine whether he is 'named' wing or hhf but I think our intent is essentially the same.

Mrs C confirmed that he had a clean out of the right knee. Nothing to do with his reco left knee.

The position my friend swore he played when in junior football...

Coach: Okay guys, you play here, here and here.. Mohammed you're on the wing... you, you, you you're here.. Mohammed, on the wing ok?
Mohammed: Okay got it.
Coach: So the plan is........... Mohammed where you playing?
Mohammed: half back pocket coach.
Everyone: *laughing hysterically*

Half forward/midfield role. With Fev gone and the fact we didn't draft a tall forward he'll be required forward more often. might cut into our flexibilty with him a bit but that's where we're at.

..not at all, him as a roaming lead up half forward is exactly what we need, and would be an awesome way to use him i reckon..
