How much do we still owe on the 1 million loan from the AFL ???

What do the financials look like ? a discussion on another site are saying we still have a commercial bill of $5M and the $1.5 debt to the AFL. Also our assets are miniscule compared to our debt.

Can anyone else shed anymore light ? Why aren't we reducing our debt ?

Yes there's a big debt to pay off (one day). Doesn't have to be paid off immediately.
Yes the debt to assetts ratio is not great (but we are servicing the loan, albeit expensive but our head is above water. We can afford the repayments.
Our debt to assetts ratio is improving (we are coming from a long way behind)
Our revenues are improving meaning the product (the team's performance) is improving.
The better the product the more attractive it is to the consumer (members, game attendees, merchandise and sponsors)

Have to take note that we have spent millions on the footy department in the last 2 years and improving the training facilities has been a priority to improve the product. Carlton is once again an attractive place to come for professional footballers looking for success.

It seems to me that we just have to get over 2010's commitments and final investment into the elite training centre, and with the healthy (improving) revenue streams we should start knocking that debt on the head post 2010).

You have to invest in your business, and most of the time that is done by carrying some debt.
It's manageable, and considering GFC (not Cats) impact, we faired very well indeed.

From a pure numbers perspective things look precarious, but there's more to it that just numbers.
We are improving in every other area you care to look at, and our revenues are improving, and we are not finding it difficult to attract great sponsors and great crowds.

Looking into the future: have a look at how many FTA games/ blockbusters we have lined up in 2010. Compare that with 2007; just 2 years ago). Now that is an attractive proposition for the Brand and any sponsor looking for maximum exposure.

IMO, we're doing very well and yes it would be great to be debt free (not have to pay the $500K? interest pa), but the fact we posted a profit of $3/4 M is a positive sign, not a negative.

The glass is half full. The liquid in the glass is from Blue Skies.

We probably had to take on more debt for the redevlopment.
Also we spent $4mil more than the previous year. i presume a large part of that is football spending

Absolutely.

I doubt the club will run those things. They'll lease them out to a management comapny as well as the cafe.

The way I see it, the club could have easily directed all the new money coming in towards resolving our debt and made it appear, on paper, more appealing. However, were they to do that, we would've got to 2010 with no debt but a poorly funded football department. That would have been far worse IMO as our football department was coming from a long way back and given how competitive the AFL is these days, with small off-field differences leading to a significant discrepancy in performance, it most likely would have meant we'd just be unable to cut it. Paying such high interest is obviously not ideal but I think the Club's done an amazing job at juggling the debt and reinvesting back in the Club to ensure we are as competitive as we can be on the field.

Good news. A $2.5m jump in football department spending should say enough about where we're heading.

You think our debts are large?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009 ... clubs-debt

Quote:
Manchester United and Chelsea were by far the most indebted, owing £699m and £701m respectively, Arsenal were third, with £416m debts and Liverpool, the other top four club, were understood to owe around £280m; their accounts, due to be filed at Companies House last week, are overdue.

Yep - $2,529,203 extra spending in the football department.

We could have held back spending on the footy department and booked a profit of $3,281,645 but thankfully the admin's a little more far sighted than that.

We have the men for the job, but you cant 'totally erase 10-15 years of repeated mismanagement in only 3 years..

You only have to look back a few years to February 2007, to the days before Pratt came on board, a month before Swann arrived, and 8 months before Judd chose us.
We had crippling debts that were only getting worse, dwindling membership (only about 27-28,000 in 2006), delapetated facilities, a presenant and board that were nothing short of a disgrace, coaches that weren't talking to each other, players who had no faith in the coach, and had just finished last the previous two years in a row. WE WERE A JOKE... AN EMBARESSMENT. We were being compared to Fitzroy in their dying days!!!!

With the transformation of the club both on and off the field since those dark days, things have improve imensley. People have to still be patient though. Asothers have said, we're coming off a looooong way back.
