One thing those old stats don't show is ..... goal assists. Just a hunch, but I'll bet anything that in 1979-1982, Maclure would've had heaps. He was really the best goal-assisting CHF I've seen (before people talked about goal assists). His contesting, tapping on, shepherding, handballing were amazing. And then in the big games, at the big moments, he'd rise to the occasion and pull out a pack mark, and kick a "captain's goal" from 50 out (even when he wasn't captain).

One of our most underrated players.

(And I love his media work........)

On the Marngrook Footy Show, Ken Hunter was asked who the best players he played with at Carlton he said Wayne Johnston and Mark Maclure. That really surprised me.

Great point, Sellers did a lot of the bullocking and grunt work at CHF and cleared a lot pathways and created a lot of scoring opportunities for the smallmen. He was also a protector of them as well.

One of his best ever assists was late in the 1982 GF when he contested the ball with Emmett Dunne near the players race in front of the Northern stand. He spoiled a contest and then dived on the ball to win it from Dunne, the ball was on the ground and he then knocked it forward to Marcou. Then Marcou collected the loose ball scooted off and slotted the sealer from about 35 metres out. It was a typical Sellers assist

I used to love his battles with Billy Picken - I always had an eye on them as they would be punching the suitcase out of each other off the ball - two great competitors for their respective clubs

And a brilliant pressure kick on the run from an angle.

It would have been about a 35 degree angle and it was straight as a die

It would be nice to have one of our talls kicking more goals, but 3 guys in the top 10 AFL goalkickers for the year is pretty good!

A genuine tall target would certainly be the missing piece. Waite, Kreuz, Hendo and Setanta work well in bringing our small forwards into it, but imagine if we had a genuine marking KF who can kick 60+ goals a year for our mosquito fleet to buzz around.

If Hendo is to stay down back (plus Watson and McCarthy developing), it makes it important for us to develop at least one of Casboult or Mitchell for some senior football perhaps even next year.

Good post Donstuie.

When played key forward in 2010 Waite certainty managed 2 goals a game:

http://www.blueseum.org/tiki-index.php? ... 3A+J+Waite

But in 2011, he has managed 13.16 from 10 games. Certainly could be higher but for better kicking.

Last week we went with one tall and a number of crumbers, but that's a little unfair as Walker and Garlett can each take a mark.

At the start of the year we went with the resting ruckman but against Collingwood (et al) this had come unstuck.

Do we need a second tall or is Waite plus a smorgasbord of dangerous forwards enough?

Interesting start to 2012 after only 3 games (and some big wins) but we have 9 players averaging 1 or more goals a game already this year:

- 9 from 3 (3 avge): Betts, Waite
- 6 from 3 (2): Hampson, Garlett
- 5 from 3 (1.7): Murphy
- 4 from 3 (1.3): Yarran, Judd
- 3 from 3 (1): Lucas, Simpson

Interesting mix of talls, smalls & mids in there.

OBVIOUSLY very eary days but in 2011 we only had 5 players do this:

- Betts 2.1
- Garlett 2
- Setanta 1.4 (8 games)
- Waite
- Walker

Looks like the coaches have asked Judd to try and score more heavily this year too.

Interesting goal kickers in 2014; after 9 games we're:

12 - Yarran
11 - Menzel, Henderson
9 - Ellard, Waite
8 - Garlett

3 smalls; 1 medium (2nd year) and 2 talls.

Who can name the last 5 (4 different players) by year?

Looks like Waite will get his first 'Leading Goalkicker' gong at the Club, being just one behind Henderson:

http://www.blueseum.org/tiki-index.php? ... aying+List

Probably the lowest total since Kouta snagged 28 in 1997:

And there we have it, Waite as leading goal kicker with 29.

The lowest since '97....

Topic of the day: WHo will kick the goals?

From 2015, our 3rd, 4th and 5th goal kicker have now gone:

http://www.blueseum.org/2015+Statistical+Leaders

1 Andrejs Everitt - 31
2 Levi Casboult - 24
3 Tom Bell - 17
4 Lachlan Henderson - 16
5 Troy Menzel - 13

In terms of goals per game, it's a little different with #4, 6 and 7 and 9 all gone:

1 Levi Casboult - 1.50
2 Andrejs Everitt - 1.41
3 Dennis Armfield - 1.08
4 Lachlan Henderson - 1.00
5 Andrew Walker - 1.00
6 Matthew Watson - 1.00
7 Troy Menzel - 0.93
8 Liam Jones - 0.78
9 Tom Bell - 0.77
10 Matthew Kreuzer - 0.69

Huge challenge - can't wait to see where the goals come from...
