OK, so I got married this year. It was the weekend of the second Essendon* game, and I was looking forward to kicking off my wedding weekend with a great victory. Two Bombers' supporting mates were up here in Brisbane for the ceremony, and came around to my place for the Carlton v Essendon* clash. This was going to be it - glory for me as I started my weekend of celebrations with a wonderful victory over the Scum. Then what happens? Blown out of the water, and a night of almost tears as my mates tried hard not to rub it all in too much for me. So it got me thinking. How have Carlton played during significant milestones in your life? Maybe it was your wedding, or the birth of a child, or your mid year HSC exams, or the passing of someone close, or the purchase of your first house? Hopefully the lads did better for you than they did before my wedding celebrations. I'm interested to hear other stories ![]() |

i hope you had a great wedding regardless. that bombers game was a thorn in my side also. he had just come off an very encrouaging performance against st kilda the game before (and i happened to get to that game) so i was pumped for the bombers game - a bit of payback, especially seems it was the last time i'd see the lads play before heading over season for the next 7 games. after that loss i was so deflated, and i thought we'd blown our finals chances. i took the attitude over 'screw it, dont worry about the footy while on your trip and just enjoy the holiday' and other than checking final scoresmatch report the day of the game i didn't. And following the blues had never been so easy - we won 6 out of 7 and even beat geelong! i downloaded all the games to watch but now i cant bare to watch given fev will be in all of them. |

In 1993, at the reception of my first wedding (been around the block a couple of times...), I had the waiting staff bringing me regular score updates from the night final we won by two points against Essendon*. It was a great pleasure to announce the result to the guests. ![]() As for the Grand Final, I organised the honeymoon flight from Singapore to get back the morning of the game at about 11.00am. Flight was delayed in Singapore, and finally landed about 12.30pm. Luggage was lost, so had to wait and fill out forms. Express taxi to a friend's place, arriving just in time for the opening bounce. Sensed we were stuffed halfway through the first quarter, fell asleep during the second, and have never seen the game. Not likely to do so in the future. ![]() |

I know it was replayed somewhere recently (can't remember exact details), and I thought to myself can I bring myself to watch it? I mean I've managed to bring myself to watch replays of 1986 and 1999, so surely I am right to move on? But I just couldn't do it! My mind has the horror of Silvagni pleading with the goal umpire that he touched that Michael Long goal... and I just can't see myself being able to cope with watching it again. |

I got married in January on purpose, as I don't trust Carlton like I used to and didn't want a loss to dampen the day. |

Was at the G, 2 April 2005. Getting badly beaten in the first quarter, first half of the 2nd quarter not much better. 8:30pm. Get a call from my father in Sydney - mum very ill, in ICU, not expected to live much longer. I run out of the G calling Qantas and Virgin trying to get a flight back to Sydney that night. No joy. Go back to my aunt's place, booked myself on the 6am flight. Got regular updates from Dad. Turned the TV on - watched completely dispassionately. First and only time I smiled for even a fleeting second that night was when the final siren went. Probably explains why I enjoy beating Essendon* more than any other team. And losing to them hurts more than any other team. |

Grand Final, 1981 I was but a budding flower seeking a Club to call my home. I was from a family where all & sundry had their own team. With so many influences around me, I could have gone either way. In particular, a favourite brother was sitting down to watch the VFL Grand Final where his team was running out to play the game. The Mighty Magpies were a chance he said. Other brothers were already identified as clearly odd or just not supportable. The temptation was forming. It was almost there. But that dark blue team was doing OK and wouldnt it be good if I stuck with the family non-tradition of everyone having a different team! |

Look, I know it's not in keeping with the thread- however, my most momentous event was hearing Adam Gilchrist pulverise the Poms in Perth during the Ashes in 2006/7, with the fastest century recorded for any Ashes contests. This occurred soon after I was sent home by my better half after giving birth to our cherub, little PD (actually, he's DJ)- so, naturally I'm pumped and then Gilly launches into Panesar as I drive up Victoria St in Northcote.......whackety whack! ![]() ![]() How this connects with Carlton? Well, Gilly himself barracks for Carlton....... ![]() |

My wedding day was 15 August 1981 ......the day Fitzpatrick gave away a free kick for time wasting and the Scum got up and won when we had the game all but won. The wedding was at 5:00 pm and I remember standing outside the Church listening to the last few minutes of the game on my trannie before the ceremony. Thats one Carlton performance I'll never forget. |

Went to my first wrestling night at Festival Hall and watched Mark Lewin and King Curtis win the world tag team championship against Abdullah the Butcher and Bulldog Brower Got home and wnt to sleep with a grin on my face...really did! ![]() |

2002...Had been through a pretty horrific #@*# cancer experience. During chemo I got right back into watching Carlton games at home. Loved watching Lappin, and Big red especially...Hoops of course( ![]() When I was well again I started going to games, and couldn't believe I'd left it so long. Then when @*##cancer came back again it was following the Blues that got me through radiation and recovery..don't remember the games specifically...but the feeling remains. Even this year..I went through two big surgeries...still went to games in between ...that's why I was so sad to let go of Fev...good or bad..you really can see the boys as extended family....but letting go is also good. Can't imagine ever straying far from Carlton obsession again. ![]() ps.Forgot to say that this year was best recovery ever, due to discovering a pretty F.A.B. bunch of posters here at TC. xx ![]() |

I handed by honours thesis in the Monday after the 1995 Grand Final. I remember watching it in the lab....alone. Terrible. No-one to share the joy with. My sister gets married on Grand Final Day next year, in the UK. We're both mad Carlton supporters, so who knows what will happen then huh? |

I got married on the weekend between the end of the pre season and the start of the regular season. That way I had something to do because we all know how frustrating that weekend is. ![]() |

My youngest brother (a fanatical Blues' supporter when they're winning!) got married and had his reception as Carlton overpowered Geelong to win the 1997 NAB Cup- as soon as the result was known, the four brothers sang the "Lily" with such gusto, particularly in the direction of the Cats' in-laws........... ![]() |

My Grandfather died on the Friday before we played Footscray late in the season in 92. We had a kid at school who was a massive Bulldogs fan. We won by 80 odd points, but because we had family from interstate I didn't go back to school until the Thursday so attention was all on the upcoming Collingwood game. I had my wisdom teeth taken out the day before we played the Lions at PP in 2001. We won by stacks, I was spewing I couldn't go and the Lions never looked back. Not such an important moment, but I was on a camp the weekend we played Melbourne in the 1988 Prelim final. I remember we were listening to the last quarter on the bus and despite the fact not one of the other kids was a Melbourne supporter I coped heaps that day. I held my own though using the old 'well at least my team got that far' line. |
