Having lived in London for a while, one of the things I loved about English football was the match day culture. Each club's supporters had pubs they called their own and basically if you were an opposition supporter you had to take off your colours before going in. The bigger clubs like Chelsea had 4 or five pubs around Stamford Bridge, while Fulham (who I supported) just had one.

It was great to go to there before kick off and have a pint, and another few after the game. If there'd been a good win there'd be singing and chanting all night. Everyone became best friends as lots of stories were told and conversations had about players, history, memorable moments etc. There was a sense of tribal unity I'll never forget.

Having been back in Oz only a year or so I am still looking for something similar. I went to Percy's bar after a game (it has lot's of Carlton memorabilia on the walls) but my mates and I were the ONLY blues supporters there. Considering there we 40,000 people at the dome that day I thought there'd be a few more.

Anyhow, I reckon it'd be awesome if all us blues supporters made a pub OURS on game day. Not that we'd could stop other supporters coming in, but it'd be awesome if we dominated it and it was known as a 'Carlton pub'. Whether it be Percy's on Lygon, or somewhere closer to the Dome it doesn't matter. I just reckon it'd be great to celebrate a win with other Carlton supporters, belting out 'we are the navy blues' into the night. Or is there somewhere everyone goes that I'm not aware of?

I've been crying out for something like this for years!

Somewhere on lygon perhaps? Or off Rathdowner? Close to PP?

The Park Spew in North Fitzroy is a popular haunt with interwebz nerds for interstate games, 4GB.

(I didn't actually read your post as it was really long but I'm guessing you're asking about a pub to watch footy at)

No I wasn't asking about a pub to watch footy at... read the post... it's worth the full minute it'll take you.

Yeah great post. Very very familiar with the English football approach

Mitre Tavern for the dome is worth a nomination.

Lygon st or a pub in carlton somewhere is really not practical, must be walking distance to the ground.

If not, anyone who's been out to the Nott in Notting Hill will know that it's a prime candidate :-)

Great idea, Naughtons on Royal Parade has too many studnets who barrack for other clubs.
The Clyde on Elgin and Cardigan?

I have to agree. As much as I'd prefer a pub in the suburb of Carlton, it's too far from the dome. The pub needs to be walking distance from the ground. There are quite a few options in the CBD, such as The Charles Dickens (Victory supporters drink there) or The Sherlock Holmes. Both are on Collins St, just a 10 min walk. There are a few other options I'll investigate

I'll nominate Jimmy Watson's on Lygon. Would love to get there for a sniff at 11-11.30 and head on over to the G or Dome an hour later.

It's within easy striking distance of Melb Central station or a tram ride down Swanston. A beer and some onion rings and a discussion of the game would be great.

I'm not from Melbourne so wouldn't have a clue (and hence it doesn't really matter what I think), but for the benefit of the discussion..

Is there anything central to both?

I believe the earlier opposing posts are both on the money...

We need a pub after the game near the MCG (and Telstra Dome), but we also need that pub to be able to cater for Foxtel and/or interstate matches. I was at Precinct Hotel on Swan Street opp Richmond Station last night and it would be perfect...big barn with heaps of video screens, good vibe etc...

I was at the Surf Club in Noosa for the Geelong/St Kida match mid season - eight screens and the best football vibe I've experienced in years...everybody turned up with scarves and beanies and created an excellent fun environment.

Don't know why the club itself doesn't market this idea.

Nixons is the closest and best pub for games at the Dome.

London Tavern is probably the best for 'G games.

I wouldnt want the club to market this idea.

For me, something along the lines of for the fans,by the fans. No involvment by the club whatsoever.

But thats IMO.

Depends...how many do you feel capable of defacing in a single session?
