Quote:
COLLINGWOOD is trialling a former US college player who sent them an audition tape showing him kicking an American football.

Former Marist College basketballer Shae McNamara has been with the Magpies for more than a week, training alongside an Irish player.

He caught the Magpies’ eye after sending this video of him kicking and handpassing an American football on a gridiron.

He's 24, pretty old to start as a footballer - let alone someone who has hardly played football before...

Why didn't we get the tape? That is the question.

(I'm not spewing, I'm just wondering and hoping for a few funny answers...)

On SEN today they said that every club got the tape... Collingwood just acted on it.

Caz can confirm, but maybe with our two new irishmen starting next year we didnt have room on our list for him as an international rookie.

Seriously...this is a frickin' joke right? Collingwood paid for his ticket out here...ha! Well - good on the bloke for putting himself out there and getting the holiday, but if I received this in the mail I would have thrown it in the bin after one viewing...ok - he has 202cms going for him, but so do quite a few kids going around these days. I've travelled the world many, many times and always took a Sherrin with me...I have seen better skills than this bloke from other tall athletes of other sports - but again...good luck to the guy for rolling the dice, but nothing will come of it. Of that I'm 100% sure.

The first half of that video was surreal. Watching someone doing run throughs... and not particularly well, as far as doing run throughs is concerned.

If it was a waste of our time to watch the video I can only imagine how I would have assessed a trial of his.

I think this is a case of Collingwood being too clever by half.

Eddie should know better. The Pies have been sponsors of the NY Magpies.

Back in 1998/9 I lived in NYC and I had a couple of games with the NY Magpies.

Standard is about C grade VAFA

AFL is played in over 20 US cities and there are dozens of players with more skill than this guy.

It would however be interesting if the AFL decided to sponsor a development program for School kids from Basketball, Soccer & American Football to move across to AFL, when they miss getting college sports scholarships.

There is almost no avenues open to athletes once they miss going to the next level.

The American guys I played with were mostly exPunters and Soccer players who missed out on moving into College programs.

School sports teams often train 3 or 4 nights a week, so these kids have plenty of discipline. AFL would be a great game for them.

USA is seriously an untaped resource of Aussie rules players. Tens of Thousands of boys play in school football teams and then hope to go onto College. Many miss as they are too tall or slim for that game, why not come and play ours.

AFL is wasting its time in South Africa, the kids over there have no real chance to make it.

From a athletic point, the guy looked pretty quick and agile for a 202cm dude.

But damn, i would rather synbad playing for us.

The guy cant hand ball or kick at all, maybe if they had mr miyagi teach him, who knows

Many moons ago (circa 1972) a black American basketballer named Willie Anderson was mooted as a possible player for North.

IIRC he was near 7' (about 213cm for you metricians) and played some practice games in the ruck but nothing ever came of it.
