I watched the match at my Sister's place (well, at least until my Brother-in-Law came home and took the remote back and insisted on watching the Rugby League. Bloody Queenslander.) at Newcastle. I've just returned home, and have had 3 hours or so pondering time of the match I just saw. Yeah, today's loss sucked balls. But, we're in the finals. 13-9 record this year. I give that a big ![]() Anyway, I got the feeling that what we might have seen, among the skill errors by all and sundry, was some practicing for next week. I think the MC decided that the result this week didn't make an iota of difference, and maybe it was more important to try some plays, and a few tweaks which may pay dividends next week. A full dress-rehearsal, if you like. If that's the case, and they rolled the dice looking to next week, then I can take today's result. I guess the proof of the pudding will be in the eating, and next week is meal time. I'm still confident that we can match, and beat Brisbane any time, anywhere. |

I'm gonna sleep just fine regardless. We were up against a real contender today. Adelaide can beat any team going, and they stepped it up a gear today. Kudos to them, and like I said in the match thread, we'd love to be watching footy of that quality of Carlton weren't on the receiving end. There was no way we were going to keep up the first quarter's intensity for all 80 minutes. I have no issue with the MC doing a little long-term coaching, and sacrificing what is really in the end an inconsequential match. I was disappointed with the result, sure. Pissed off at some of the stupid turnovers and skill errors. But if I'm right, we'll be laughing it up next weekend. |

..we match up poorly vs the cows.. ..simple as that.. ..we do however match up better against quite a few of the other top 8 teams, and in saying that we're still a smokey.. ..i don't think the granny will be out of the season's two top teams.. |

You know what I think today might have been? Lazy, immature tripe, where several midfielders refused to take responsibility for their direct opponent. The flow-on effect from that was immense; it made Adelaide look like they had a spare man everywhere. How can a team have a forward and defensive line work so hard, only to have a bunch of blokes in the middle come in and literally @#$%&! it up for the rest of them. If I was Jordan Russell, I'd be @#$%&! frightened of kicking it to them too. HANG YOUR HEADS IN SHAME BECAUSE THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR WHAT YOU DELIVERED. NONE. Worst performance I have seen in a VERY long time. |

This year has brought a lot experience that should toughen up the young minds for the years ahead. That 'should' is my only worry. Next week will bring invaluable experience. |

Fevola saying on The Footy Show "we can win the premiership" goes against the mindset the coaching staff have been working hard to instil since we were thrashed by Essendon* and Collingwood. We were way ahead of ourselves then too. They must be very frustrated. Once again I find myself doubting if we can win a premiership with this guy on board. |

Synbad wrote: The well drilled teams are way too good for us... In a nutshell. How long has it been since we had a great coach? For years now we have been unable to play well drilled, organised football. This team gets by off the odd bit of motivation (revenge for last week; get the monkey off the back etc), and the brilliance of Gibbs, Murphy, Judd, Fevola. Not because we are well drilled. Don't look at the Cats game. They have been atrocious of late, and they are not a well drilled team anyway - they are a team that has dominated the caper for 3 years because of an exceptional midfield and defense that for 3 years just did what they wanted. Bomber is a mediocre coach. Not special. Not unique. Problem we have is we aren't there yet and we don't have the muscle in midifeld like the Cats had. |

What else do teams try and make the finals for.... to win premierships, not to say we made the finals and finished 7th.. what would you have liked Fev to say - "were just happy to make the 8 and don't care if we win any games and bomb out in the first week" The best team in September wins the flag, not the best team in April, May, June, July and August. |

The Crows are a team that don't make mistakes, and when they put the pressure on us, we were not accountable. |

You can play this way against Melbourne (we did) and still win games but against Adelaide (especially Adelaide)?? No frickin way. |

What's this 'mindset' business. Much of it is innate. Carlton at the moment are the most reactive club in the league, make no mistake. It is a mix of where we are at at the moment in terms of our development (probably a bit behind where we could be based on our worst performances) and the make up of the list. Having a few really flaky types who would have a hard time lining up for Melbourne in place of a few who would really make a difference in some key areas. Some of it will be fixed as we develop if we can get the coaching right and some of it can only be fixed by clever turnover of our list. For instance, if people think all that this club needs is for someone to threaten the likes of Jordan Russell with his life and then he'll suddenly become a skinnier cross between Glen Archer and Anthony Koutoufides then they will be sadly disappointed. I'm not saying that Russell is one of the 'flaky' ones, mind you, just that we may be expecting him to do a role that he may not be cut out for. |
