Post subject:  Joey - Part of our future or not?

I read some varying opinions of Joey Anderson the past few days which I found interesting.

My own opinion is Joey is a definite keeper and I'm a bit perplexed as to why he hasn't had much senior opportunity this year.

Unquestionable courage.
Full commitment to any role he's given.
Full willingness to attack the opposition and take the game on.

At the moment he reminds me of a young Paul Bower.
IMO, is a medium defender with good spoiling technique who can play on all sizes bar the oppositions tall timber.

Thoughts..

I like the kid and enjoyed seeing him in the Ants on Saturday.

He has fallen behind some of our other medium size defenders.

Needs to add another string to his bow but he is definitely worth keeping.

Definitely part of our future. It would be madness to lose him. He was desperately unlucky to not play more of this season IMO. Injured when he got his chance. I will never forget his courage last year running into the hole in front of Brown and taking one hell of a gutsy mark.

Foot skills could be his Achilles Heel?

If not Joey, then we'll need to think about who won't be there next year - especially given its the last of the compromised drafts for a few years ... so is it time to stock up on new kids?

Joey?
Hartlett?
Edwards?
Bentick?
Fisher - contracted for another i think

we'd need to turn over about 5 minimum given we'd elevate Joseph and Gartlett i'd expect

Thoughts?

its a sign of our depth that joey, austin, browne, jacobs etc are being made to work to get in our best 22. . .gone are the days where mcgrath, prendegast etc were picked purely because we had no-one else!

I like joey. . Not in my best 22, but he's definately in plans moving forward. Anyone think he still has more filling out to do? i'd like to see a little more weight on the young guys hips, we have speed, but gibbs, and murphy and hadley's strength is they're hard to tackle as they're strong in the hips.

There's been some clear improvement in his consistancy to hit targets by foot and by hand...

Joey's a late bloomer and the club are not rushing his developement..IMHO

Injuries haven't helped either...

Lacks composure in traffic but probably still has a fair bit of upside.
Worth keeping for another year.

Having this discussion with my brother last night...my opinion is I don't think it will turn out.

Not everyone makes it.....but good luck to him anyways.

He's not big enougn to play as a key defender, and he doesn't have the footskills to play as a rebounding medium defender. With Thornton already in the side as a medium defender, and Armfield coming along nicely it's going to be tough for Anderson to grab a spot in the side and make it his own.

id love to see him given a go on the wing/in the middle. would hate to see a talented player lose his chance at an afl career just because he wasnt the best medium defender. i think hed be very dangerous at the centre circle..

he has never had much continuity with his football playing

I find that when things look promising he then has an injury

has he played more than 3 games in a row for the seniors ?

anyone brave enough to chop off Jonathan Brown is worth persisting with

also I don't like to judge any player until their fourth year and that will be next year ... ask me then

I cry at the short sighted vision questioning the worth of Andersen. Joey Andersen has a role at Carlton and you would delist 10 players before him and give him the extra year or two to develop his disposal because

a) we need to develop replacements for Houlihan, Scotland, Stevens as running half back flankers
b) he has all the ball getting ability, pace but extra toughness than these guys.
c) Given his age he is a better footballer than Bannister, Edwardes, Wiggins, Cloke, Hartlett, Bentley, (there's six off the top).
d) Massive upside & at number 68 pick you have to give him the extra year.
e) Could he be developed as an in and under midfielder to replace Hadley. Same build and ball getting ability?
f) He stamps himself on bullants games in a way that Hartlett, Edwardes and others don't. You get a feeling he is only a season away from really clicking
g) He would be picked up by another club in a flash which is evidence of his value
h) Never had the opportunities of others. The MC need to give him 6 games on end in the seniors

You'd reckon at least 6 to 8 players will get cut from our senior list at the end of the season. We've got to keep turning our list over...

There's a lot of water to go under the bridge before list lodgement time - but it's hard to see AB, Banno, Harts and Jake being there next year. The likes of Cloke, Fisher, Hadley and Wiggo will come under close scrutiny too - but it's likely to be one of those years where some tough decisions are going to be made on some decent players.

My point is that guys like Joey and Browne (the 2 best players on the ground for the Bullants on Saturday, by the way), who ideally you'd like to persist with for at least another year, might be the victim of being at the wrong club at the wrong time. That's not to say that they won't get an opportunity at another club...

the likes of pfeiffer, bentley and ellard would be under more scrutiny than browne, hadley or anderson. .
