Ken Hunter, who one of his former coaches, Robert Walls, says is among the very few he's seen to have never failed football's courage test, spoke of the moment his unflinching on-field bravery was born. It was as a teenager, in one of his earliest WAFL games for Claremont, when Hunter backed uncomfortably into the unknown and dropped a mark. On realising "no one was coming", he made a silent pledge to never again succumb to that fear all footballers know. He also committed himself to actively seek occasions on the field in which he could face the test. That way, whatever might confront him without warning, he would be ready.
