Post subject:  an observation on the night ....

At one stage in the latter part of the game a voice bellowed from the crowd to the effect ..... "Well done Kreuzer, do you have any brothers who want to join the team ? " Laughter around the crowd. The voice then went on to exclaim ...." what about sisters for that matter to replace some of the girls on the team". Some more laughter. The voice went on to pointedly name the 'girls' on the team. This time, there wasn't much laughter.

Though I can appreciate the frustrations of the night and the occassional jibe we can all make at a particular player or another, it did strike home a bit differently this time as not far from where we were sitting, sat Matty K's folks (also Waitey at one stage). For the family of players in particular, comments from the crowd, delivered in the heat of the moment can be very difficult to take, especially if their son is not performing or perceived to be performing.

I must admit I left a few minutes before the end, as much disappointed in our performance as wanting to avoid hearing the howls of joy from the Magpie supporters, who on the night deserved the right. We can all get too intense about our team's slip ups and especially now with hope and expectations growing, such a loss takes on a disproportionate level of anger and finger pointing. From my perspective, it's all part of the game ... one home & away loss to Collingwood is not in itself all that important, given what's happening overall.

I for one, would prefer to see the Blues finish 7-8th and get bundled out in the first finals match rather than attract any more unrealistic expectations. We are not a serious contender this year but within two years, it will be a different matter and I look forward to it !

Thanks for indulging this moment of navel gazing.

The voice should go down to training one night this week and tell the boys to their face. Then it would be worthy of putting in here.

Maybe we could dress the parents of players in some sort of brightly coloured vest with their child's number on the back. That way the crowd could either self-censor or more specificaly target their heckling as they prefer.
