Just putting it out there for discussion............................

On Friday night, Channel 7 showed footage of Matthew Lappin talking to Fevola who was clearly confused and frustrated with Lappin, even at times shaking his head.

Now Fevola is know to be a sook at times, but i was 100% behind Fev.

CLEARLY we have no forward line set-up.

Collingwood constantly had players home and more often than not, a man in or around the square should a clearence be made.

We had nothing. It was go to Fevola........... or just bomb it in and hope for the best.

In the 2nd half (i think maybe the last qtr) there was an incident where Simpson broke away from the pack, looked up into our forward line and just stopped. Not His Fault........... Cause if you looked up forward there was Fevola (who was double teamed) and two other players with their backs to the ball.

Yarren, as a forward, looks confused.

I think even Kreuzer makes us look good. If Fevola is having a bad day, our plan B seems to just be 'Throw Kreuzer down there'.

I'm just throwing this question out there for a few reasons.

#1. The Fevola reaction to Lappin the other night. And we only managed 4 goals so perhaps Fevola is right in his frustrations.

#2. Lappin on the radio earlier on in the year saying "Fevola is giving me Grey hairs".............. you know the saying, a good workman never blames his tools.

#3. Lappin is playing country football so i'm just wondering if he's 100% commited to his job? I remember earlier on in the season reading a story that he wanted to play rather than go along to match and watch our next opponent (as requested by the club).

I'm interested to hear other peoples opinions.

I wonder what coaching experience Matthew has had. I believe like Ratts he is learning on the job.

I guess the same could be said about Robert Harvey

Harvey is a skills and development oach so tactically he isnt really in the picture which is ok...... maybe he should be more..

Anyway.... Lappin is not the answer.....

Our inside 50s are terrible... and he is another that only got the job because hes an old boy not because he was the best man for the job...

Was a player coach last year... When is the last time you saw a captain coach in a serious side???

It's all about knowledge, skills and experience.

Does he have all these three is sufficient depth to be what we need?

We have too many "early learners" on our coaching panel. It is not that they won't be any good, it is just that we need experienced and knowlegable people running our on field performance given the relative inexperience of our head coach.

Fev cops alot of flak and sometimes rightly so but our kicking to him is appalling. If he is on the lead we kick it to him over his head, on the bounce or wide of him. If its in front of him on the money then 9/10 he's going to mark it !

FFS why can't we have a plan B when Fev is heavily marked ????????????????????????

I dont understand the Lappin appointment but those who made the decision know him far better than I do. If he's not up to it, lets hope they will move him on ASAP.

As for Fev, he needs to improve his act as well. He soon runs out of tricks when playing on quick defenders. His only plan B is to run wide to the boundary and hope his team mates will weight their kicks to perfection.
He also struggles to utlise any space created by team mates. Several times on Friday Maxwell was dragged away by a leading forward and Fev led up behind them. It was too easy for Maxwell to fall back in front of Fev and spoil.
Credit where it's due, Maxwell played his role with smarts and a heap of courage.

Who would want to stand in front of Fev 6 days after he put Ted Richards in hospital?

Well, it's also interesting to note the other night, we beat collingwood with Inside 50's yet we only managed 4 goals??????????? WTF?

Lappin has got to go

"uh we just gotta get it in there quick and hope fev or kruez can take a mark, but yeh our kicking has been off so hopefully one of the below the knee players can snag one"

or something to that effect

yeh nice setup !! :garthp:

Body language can be ambiguous to interpret. Was Fevola not agreeing with the coaching panel's instructions (which I assume had Ratten's approval)?
It wouldn't be the first time that's happened. IMO senior players wanting to do things their own way creates a massive problem for any team's cohesion. Do we have team morale problems at the moment?

Lappin is in semi-retirement, being shovelled favours from the club and Ratten.
Maybe it has something to do with the end of his contract...

Either way he is there because Sticks and Ratten are too unprofessional/spineless to get rid of him.
Should have gone at the start of the year instead of being promoted.

People on this forum are always so quick to jump in and say "what do you know about *forward coaches*? how would you know that so and so is not up to it?"
Results speak for themselves.

Ratten has got us up to 50/50 and maybe playing finals
Montgomery (or whoever) has melded the backs into a fairly decent (and improving) unit.
The centre square still has a bit of work to do, but most of that is from the lack of a key ruckman and an in-and-under ball winner
The forward area is our one glaring weakness.

Sure we don't have a large selection of talented forwards to pick from, but there has been no imagination or effort put in to new strategies and Plan B, C etc.
The games where Fev is one out on an average opponent and the 50 is open, we do well. When Fev is covered, we fail 70-80% of the time I would guess.
We can't rely on players like Presti to be late withdrawals - WE NEED SOMEONE WITH IDEAS

Fisher has gone backwards for too long, and is only just starting to get back to his previous form.
Cloke and Wiggins are gawn.
Garlett and Yarran have been sent out like headless chooks to run around.
Houla is patchy at best

The players were awful on Friday - Ratten can't cop all the blame.
But the forward structure was awful - blind freddy could see that.

If he doesn't leave gracefully at the end of the season, it will start to look embarassing for him, and Ratts, and up the chain to Sticks.
God help us if Fev ever misses a large chunk of games

..any ideas of who we'd like structuring our fwd line..?..

..yes he's another blueboy, but Lance was known for his 'footy brains', and during his good pacthes of CHF work he really knew how to position the fwd line, and could read the play brilliantly.. ..he seemed able to run things when out on the field, so is it safe to assume he'd be good directing fwd's off-field..?.. ..he also was able to function well with Fev, and this talk about Fev not working well with other big KPF's isn't something i subscribe to, it's just Fev needs proper direction.. ..he worked well with Lance, and also worked well in last year's exhibition match with browny.. ..so hopefully he'd be able to get Fev and either setant/krooz working together and not against eachother..

You should have bought a junior admission standing room ticket underneath the old Northern/Olympic Stand - only cost me 60 cents was dry as a bone - got a bit wet spraying the bottles of champagne around at the end of the game.

week in week out ... watching our forward entries and our kicks out of defence .. as well as our linking up is like the death of a thousand cuts....

its just poor organisation....

Well. we'll have to wait hope and see what happens at the end of the year.

But the Carlton 'meritocracy' model is starting to have legs.

Sticks Ratten Lappin ........Riley Montgomery Harvey Capuano

We need real tacticians.

We can't blame the injury to Waite, Warnock, Walker for our current woes. Sure they'd help but there has to be a plan to suit our strengths.

We have a very good list albeit young, with a few superstars (Judd Fevola Waite)
They are not gelling as a team

We need to add another tactician...Laidley, McKenna, Longmire...if we can't sack them becuase of spine issues. Ability to take appropriate and swift action (the Carlton way) is another issue.

Lappin was a brilliant forward. I would find it hard to imagine he would suck as a forward coach as he was one of the smarter forwards to pull on the jumper recently. Given we are one of the most heavily scoring sides we must be doing something right.

I got no idea how the delegations work on matchday, but you'd have to imagine Ratten has final say on strategy and it would be Lappin's job to communicate various things to our forwards.

Do you actually expect him to to go in depth about what our forward structure is? It was a 15 second interview as he was leaving the field!!
