I know there are heaps of Ratten bashing threads etc. around here, and I for one am not a Ratten basher. Yes, he gets outcoached against the best, but deep down I feel that he will grow with the team (and FWIW I think that his choice of assistant coaches does him no favours). For one, I have met him a few times and find him a fantastic communicator and is very honest (MASSIVELY important for the modern day coach IMO). However, his biggest downfall is also of major importance (if not the most), match day tactical nous.... bringing me to my next subject.. Dean Laidley. By all reports Laidley was a FANTASTIC match day coach (who I also know Ratten rated highly and said that he was the best tactical coach in the AFL) but by all reports couldn't communicate and hence this was his downfall. Seeing we are now in a much better financial position than in recent memory and have strong leadership through Swann, would it not be remiss of us not to be chasing Laidley hard to be a "head of coaching" or the like, which won't involve training, communication etc.. but rather tactical planning for our next opponents and match day assistance....This would assist Ratts in his biggest flaw. Thoughts??? |

I've been thinking about this too. The only issue may be whther Ratts will feel threatened by having a potential senior coach (a la Malthouse/Buckly) sitting in the wings. A few loses and the hysterical amongst us may start spruiking Laids as the saviour (gulp). Can Ratts' ego cope? I like the idea personally, because we clearly lack in this area.... but do we need this more than better tactical set ups from our and opposition kick ins? We may need to fill two needs I think. |

Laidley owes a lot of his game-day tactics to one of his (low profile) assistants. Interestingly, a North person recently remarked that when you look at what he achieved with what he had at the Kangas, imagine what he could do with a list like Carlton's .... |

The Laidley idea has been trampled upon from what i hear about a month ago... Laidley wouldnt kill off his coaching sapirations to make Ratts look good. Ratts wouldnt want a guy come in and tell him.... "NO NO NO NO NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO... WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?" |

Perhaps we could be a leader and restructure a new coaching setup. Do we have to have a 'senior' coach with a 'forward' coach 'midfield' coach and 'defensive' coach? IF Ratts is struggling, why couldn't he be given a rejigged portfolio while he's contracted and we rejig the whole coaching structure? |

I'm hearing that Laidley could join the Hawks even if Hardwick lands a gig. But like Synbad said, Ratten would feel threatened by a man far more intelligent than him so i doubt it will happen. |

Good enough for Clarkson (a premiership coach who is more likely to think "why do I need help?") but not for Ratts??????? A friend of mine's (Simonverbeek) brother, put it best when he pointed out that 3 of the past 4 weeks (except the Richmond game) we have been smashed in the first half by not having the right game plan for that opponent.. what that shows us is that what we plan for all week is wrong and the players go out there with a plan only to see themselves getting beaten.. only after a rejig at half time do we turn it around... hence the need for more tactical know how... Enter Laidley!!!! |

I think you'll find that Laidley is greatest strength is knowledge of the opposition and pointing out the oppositions strengths and weaknesses. Pretty sure it was Wallace who said he is great at counteracting opposition moves. but thats not our major problem. We have no plan, no system, no style of play and our development sucks right now. Other teams are jumping us just on this point alone. we have the talent. |

Quote: listening to Lappin at 3 quarter time been interviewed "all we need to do is to kick a couple of goals " Were you seriously expecting to hear the entire strategy of what they were planning on national television? |

Not required, there is a reason why Laidley is no longer at North. Coaching match day, is a by product of the planning and attention to detail during the week!!! Players themselves, will know when they need to role down defensively, push up etc. when they become very confident in the game plan, and equally confident in their ability to carry it out!! The shuffle on match day, are generally preplanned, the effectiveness of a Dean laidley was slowly declining as the shinboner message was slowly losing its effectiveness!! We will be OK, we have enough quality and experience in the box to install their print onto our team. Go Blues!!!!!!!!! |

I dont understand why it would be good enough for a Premiership coach in Clarkson to have Laidley there and not Ratts... So by what that says, we should only hire assistants with less experience/tactical nouse then our current coach.. God help us if thats the case... Ratts should have a more professional attitdue and not let his ego get in the way of ideas that could improve the side's preformance greatly going forward.. The best thing Carlton can do in my opinion, is to immediately stop this 'jobs for the boys' crap that seems to be happening under Sticks's presidency, and take on the Dick Pratt attitude of targeting the best people for the job. That was exactly the attitude we used to in the 70s, 80s and 90s when we were a force. |
