It is becoming obvious to me that most sides view Carlton as the team they would love to beat.....the new Collingwood if you will...as we are seen to have 'so much money,' 'so many no 1 draft picks' and 'Bought the best player in the league!'
Although this is not nessisarily a bad thing, the effect is that we always seem to come up against a team that is switched on and plays out of their skins, such as the Freo game last week, every time we play the bumbers and so on...

As an avid AFL follower i go to most Adelaide and Port Power home games and i have noticed that even the crowd gets more involved when they play against the Blues. Surely if this is the case many of our wins and losses have been unfairly scrutinised as most of the time only the opponents position on the ladder has been taken into account when judging the performance.

Thoughts?

Blockbuster Fatigue!

I knew there was a reason why we've been dropping games we probably should've won.

You may be right, but it's a good thing really. I got pretty effing sick of being pitied during 2003-2007, so I'll take the hate and envy any time.

This is not a new thing - in the 70s 80s and 90s everyone wanted to beat Carlton too - in fact when the Saints used to beat us in that era it was like they won the flag (maybe because they only won 5 games in 30 years against us)

That is the beauty of "They know we're coming" . It wasn't just for us to feel good about ourselves - it was a (not so) subtle reminder to all of them about the natural order of things.

What do you expect when the club comes out telling everyone "WE'RE COMING"

We've been the laughing stock of the AFL and our marketing department think they can buy back respect with stupid slogans and Dick Pratts money.

Has anyone noticed how the Bombers have gone about earning back respect? There motivation behind the resurgence of there club was how everyone had written them off as bottom 4 side in 2009.

We used Pratts money to print up some posters and billboards to tell everyone we are coming.

I do.

Its just this club just keep making dumb decision after dumb decisions and then get Pratt to sign some cheques to try buy respect like we've bought everything else.

The brilliance of Melvey's position is that no matter the outcome he's a winner.

If we fail, as he oft contends we will, he gets to sit atop his high horse and say "I told you so".

If we succeed he gets to bask in that success and glory with every other Carlton fan who has rode out the storm.

But, to answer Juzzy's question... I'm not really sure if he does support Carlton. Perhaps it'd be more apt to say "he follows Carlton", because 'support' isn't really what he lends the Blues.

Doesn't matter whatever everybody else is doing. I don't respect the Bumbers with their game plan. I really don't. They can have their play on at all costs as plan A, B and C. We will still have the personnel... Yarran may even surprise you...I bet he'll be a good one by 2011...he's very young you know. Gotta get em when you can and we did at pick 6 as an investment...it wont go wrong (barring injury).

Lets wait and see if we make the finals first; there's another 7 rounds to go and we are 1 game plus percentage ahead. Win against the Swans at home (a long time coming but due...because we are coming at them) and we are a couple ahead. It is highly probable we make the 8, but lets wait and see.

Next year, another preseason under the belts of the kids (most of our list), 6 new inclusions and I'd say a mighty scalp in trade time. Then we will be seriously coming.

It's all about Carlton. They all want our scalp because there's so many of us Australia wide and we are coming, no doubt (ebbs and flows atm, that's all)

Come on Melvey you can do it. Believe with me ....Come on...you can do it

I don't believe in our coach and some of the boys that take the field don't either.

You know people who like the sound of their own voice? You met people who want to be noticed? You heard of people who's life is centred around their keyboard because thats all they have? So now you know.

Melvey, you have zero way of knowing whether that's actually the truth, so just cork it. For your own sake. You're starting to look silly.

Everyone wants to beat Carlton?

Wow, I never would have guessed.

So, are we to understand that, say;

Essendon* don't want to beat Geelong;

Brisbane don't want to beat Port; or

Richmond don't want to beat Collingwood?

Don't Carlton want to beat eveybody else?

Not saying that...but it just seems like we rarely play teams that dont look switched on. Compare Freo and how they came out against us with the side that came out against the crows. When was the last time we played a side that looked that disinterested?? Richmond in Rd1 is the only one I can think of, and look what happened...

I remember hearing that Kevin Sheedy would always pump his bombers up before a carlton game and the players all knew that that was the one they had to win. Do you think that this could have rubbed off on Mark Harvey, or Bomber Thompson? Do you rekon Al Clarkson would feel the same way, or Choco Williams??

They DO know we're coming.
If we were to go back to the thread where this was first discussed, we would see the differing views but as a marketing ploy it has been a huge success and that cannot be argued. We have record membership, record attendances, opposition clubs hate us and we are moving inexorably up the ladder.
The slogan and that's all it was ever intended to be, is a masterpiece of marketing designed to let the rest of the world know they have had their day and we will soon be dominating again and thus to get members aboard. It didn't say, "We are coming and will win the flag in 2009." It is 'deliciously' provocative with an open-ended outcome.
They have always hated us but now they fear the future. With good list management, a bit better luck with injuries to key players and a good game plan, it is inevitable that we will be challenging within the next few seasons.
That's why they are up for us. They have to make hay while the sun is still shining, albeit wanly.
And Melvey, well he may be pessimistic but he does generate discussion, which is why we are here.
Isn't it?
