I think people should take a step back and hold judgement on Chris, he hasnt had the impact that his fellow draftees have had but he reminds me of Leon Davis.

Remember how patient “the filth” were with him. I think he will be a top flight player in 6 years but in saying that if given the choice again would TC’ers have preferred we drafted Rich or happy we went with Yarran?

Rich
Gibbs
Murphy
Judd
Walker
Kreuze

Is pretty enticing in hindsight

The only thing I've gleaned from the short time he's had a senior level is that he's a naturally gifted and highly skilled footballer.
The question mark hangs over his application and that will be answered over the next couple of years.

I wouldn't have been happy with Rich. Vanilla and his Head aint suited to Carlton....much much much prefer Yarran.

I would have liked McKernan...he was my pick of the talls...apart from Nick Nat of course and I'll be pleased to see him turn into a gun.

..yer joking right..??!!.. ..and i'm asking in all seriousness.. ..Rich is exactly the sort of player we want on our list, 'head-wise'.. ..he's tough, gutsy, tenacious, with a strong work ethic.. ..it's an indictment against our midfield to say that if we picked him, he'd be our most physical presence in the guts.. ..Yarran has supposedly sublime skills.. ..i've seen him do a few nice things, granted.. ..but i've also seen a few nice things done by most of the new kids playing this year.. .... ..i've also seen many a time Rich's great skills on show.. ..if it takes Yarran as long as Leon to start playing good consistent footy, we got robbed..

I'm more impatient than most....yet even I would admit it is too early to tell.

big preseason coming up for yarran....needs to clearly build his tank to allow him to show off his undoubted skill.

no doubt was a ballsy call by the recruiters given the "mature/ready made" talent that was around....only time will tell if his selection was pure genius or sheer naivete !

dont forget we're judging these kids after a handful of games. . . Yarran was picked for the TYPE of player he is, he'll come on, give him time. Yeh daniel rich will be a star, but meh are melbourne crying about taking jack watts? No. Because they know that he's the Position they needed most, and they can build a team around him hopefully. Daniel rich would have been great to get, can never have too many midfielders, and gun midfielders at it. .

There are Daniel Rich's in every draft, every year. Vanilla mids who will be great out of the box.
But their upside is limited. Daniel Rich will be playing the same footy in 5-7 years.

Yarran is a risk, granted, but if he turns out like a McCleod or a Burgoyne.... we'l they dont come along every draft.
Worth the risk.

No problem with the clubs selection here.

Nope.

As SnickerS says there is a Daniel Rich in every draft and yeah he'll be a 200 games player but look I'm personally happy that our recruiters took a risk...something they haven't been known to do in the past.....I am just not a fan of the "ready mades" it scares me to think of how much improvement is really there....I've been influenced a bit from the 'upside' king in Paf but that's where I stand at the moment.

I'm not a recruiter.....so the weight of the CFC doesn't stand on my shoulders so I can come and say from my view of players...the types i like and dislike I would rather Yarran on our list than Rich, anyday.

..i don't prescribe to all this baloney about limited upside cos they're a ready-made player.. ..that's like saying that geelong didn't hit the lottery with selwood cos he doesnt have huge upside.. ..and thats bollocks.. ..basically, both selwood and now rich are good enough to play well in good established midfields..

.. ..look at the other 'late' developers.. ..what do you expect of them..?.. ..another pre-season, more endurance, footy experience etc etc etc.. ..well, selwood and rich types are getting that too, and are also improving because of it, and if they're good they'll continue to push themselves and improve, as does any star player..

..and bloody hell, fancy calling a mid of Rich's ilk 'vanilla'.. ..that's crazy.. ..mids like him and selwood are similar in ways to mids like voss and roo [crow variety].. ..they dont come every year, and calling them vanilla is way off the mark..

..Rich may play the same style of footy in 5-7 years granted, but it will be better footy than he's already playing now.. ..and that's v.impressive.. ..he is also the exact kind of mid we need and do not have on our list.. ..it is the one missing ingredient to our midfield, and until we address this our midfield will be good, but not great.. ..in turn, Judd will need to play that role in the guts and the roll-on effect continues..

..for where our list is at, we could not afford to take a 'risk' as you call it, with our first pick.. ..especially when a HFF wasn't our biggest weakness.. ..inside mid and chf/chb were by far our more pressing concerns in regards to building our list.. ..flashy silky flankers that pose a possible risk, that also have 'lazy' hype and which may take a few years to come good can just as easily be picked up later in the draft.. ..or rookie'd or psd..

..you do realise that good ol' Murphos was ready made.. ..and not only has he improved heaps, but i reckon he's got more left in him too.. ..it's nutty to think that just because a player is ready made, that they have less upside..

Not looking to argue against Yarran but Rich isn't your traditional vanilla mid; not much physical upside sure, but his kicking skills are elite, unbelievably so, in fact.

His issues are that he doesn't look as though he will be a good inside mid (given his lack of pace), and of course...

... foetus hands.

..ppl said similar of diesel, west, kirk, mitchel.. ..when you're that good, you just get your hands on the ball.. ..quick reflexes, lightning fast correct decision making are [in my opinion] more inborn than learned traits..

Yes, but the more you ask of his hands, the more likely they will succumb to their foetus nature and fail him.

Those other blokes didn't have tiny hands. He can't do a West, Diesel or Mitchell and collect and dish off in the same motion consistently, especially as he gets more and more finger injuries by playing this great game. Dunno about Kirk in the trenches personally.

Tiny arms and tiny hands lower his chances of being a successful footballer, it's that simple.

Spot On !!!

Rich is NOT vanilla.....and if you can't see that then you have no reason to be discussing football.

Big gamble by the recruiters in getting Yarran......at the moment.....not looking too good. But I am prepared to give it some time.

Haven't we already got a silky skilled, flashy HFF who's a bit lazy :yikes:
