sean, do you know the details of the exclusive deal we have with the papers?
Its disappointing you were told you could do it, subject to approval from the AFL, only to then be told you can't, but you'd think the benefits we get from the deal with the papers would far outweigh what your friends can offer.
Good luck to them though.
Honestly I don't know of the details of the club's arrangement with any of the papers. But, whatever they are, I think it incredibly narrow minded to seclude yourself to that one branch of the media. It's basically a big "@#$%&! you" to anyone who doesn't belong to that company or school of journalism.
And, to that end, how often do we see our guys featured in these rags anyway? Judd was interviewed by Sheehan (HUN) for the Foxtel program the other night and Ratts had an interview mid last week I believe that was on the AFL site. Personally, and I don't think I'd be alone on this, I love and take a keen interest in pretty much anyone Carlton who speaks to anyone in the media. The club's policy ultimately hinders them in the sense that we certainly won't be going down to Carlton, knowing we won't get any support from the club with regards to interviews or the like, but will instead go to Richmond who have said they're happy to help us out. And any other club happy to have a chat with us. Carlton isn't one of those clubs, so we won't be bothering to profile them or a player, which should be disappointing to all fans of the club, and any Carlton fans who'd watch the show because there won't be anything catering specifically to their tastes as Carlton follower.
We're hardly big fish in the scheme of things, just trying to get a leg up in the industry and produce a show that is lighthearted, fun and enjoyable.
What makes this so disappointing, for me anyway, is that as a Carlton fan I was really looking forward to putting in the work that'd make other Carlton fans rapt to see what we'd done. I too feel that the club would have been pretty pleased with the interview as, ultimately, it was showcasing one of its most marketable players and it was to celebrate and pay homage to the club's history.
The point I'm trying to make is it is the club, ultimately, who lose out. If they want the bucks for exclusivity fair play to them, well done to them for brokering that deal, but I don't see us getting all that much bang for our buck when it comes to buying those papers.
