Post subject:  Culture still not right

Tell me if I am wrong but the playing culture isnt right.....we can harp on about the pros and cons of our list vs Essendon* and others but there is something wrong with the culture still...not everyone is putting in like they should and I think it stems from the top ie Kernahan and Ratten...still think we could do with a new president who sets the standard with no boys club mentality and this goes back to how the coach was appointed with little process ....
There is not that feeling of everyone caring about each other or the club and it reflects on the field...the players dont look close like other teams, dont fire up for each other and some dont hurt enough when we do badly. There is not the encouragement from senior players to junior players that you see in some other teams and that has to affect development
The passion/excitement seems missing to me ....the Judd factor/shine has worn off and we look a team of individuals...

For all the talk that comes out of the club about "being professional", and "only wanting the best"; some of our actions don't seem to back those statements up.

i agree

we sure do look like a bunch of individuals running around out there

not sure what the answer is

but from an outsider looking in , there appears there might be some underlying issues at present

I really believe part of the problem is we think it will be "ok"

So we have Juddy
Fev
3 number 1 picks
Swanny
A new training facility....

... so its gunna be ok.........

Were lacking in a heap of areas from where im watching this.

I think our coaching is lacking.
I think there is a lack of development.
We have a pretend president...
We have too many heads on the board that are defensive about new people coming.. when some of them have offered nothing or have surpassed their used by date.
Were too chummy and live in the past....

Thats for starters

I think there's a few senior players who have been affected by the dark times and have lost the killer competitive instinct. Maybe they're not even aware of it themselves and maybe it's rubbing off on some of the youngsters. The coaches should be damn well aware of it though!

No doubt Sticks has to depart the boardroom and let Newton take the chair, IMO.

Our culture is good when we win but bad when we lose.

Even in some of those wins we really haven't nailed the opposition on the occasions when we've had the chance to really pulvarise them.
We're not ruthless.

..agree, the Judd shine has definately worn off, and also as much as i admire him as a professional sportsman.. ..he's our captain by default, and while i'm content (again, by default).. ..he's not the best captain going around.. ..he's great off field and on field, he gets the best out of himself and he leads by example.. ..but he seems to lack that extra edge that not only inspires his team-mates, but also puts that little bit of fear into them.. ..there's a few players that seem to have little fear of dissappointing their captain and team-mates, and from the outside it seems that Judd doesn't get stuck into them enough.. ..i'm clueless as to what happens in the rooms, training track etc etc but on field during the game he seems to be more focused on his own play and getting the most out of himself.. ..sure he brings others into the play as well, but when he should 'fly the flag' or 'put a rocket' under his team-mate he doesn't.. ..he's a bit too professional if there's such a thing, and while he'll give his very best for the club (indeed, for any club) he doesn't 'bleed blue'.. ..not yet at any rate.. ..and maybe not ever, cos as great as he was for WC he didn't bleed 'blue and gold' either..

.. ..also, as much as we had to appoint him captain cos of a leadership vaccuum in the club, i think a few of the more senior/older players might deep down resent how he seemed to walk into the captainship, or the fact that their lackluster attitude/preparation now isn't enough to get them the accolades that they so easily got before his arrival, and subsequent up-staging of them..

..as others have said, we lack bonafide leaders..

When the president gets the players together for a booze bender till all hours........

When people are given jobs by their mates....

When board members protect entry onto the board by others....

When we have the "Carlton swagger " without the groundwork to back it up....

... we do lack leadership... and its not just on the ground mind you...

.. Synbad, i'll happily admit that when it comes to the high-end off field stuff such as the board i'm not very well clued in, but i agree that as much as i dig Stick's, a figurehead president isn't the answer.. ..especially if he's on the sauce with players after a match (let alone a loss).. ..it does seem though that we do have too much of an individualistic mindset on-field at times.. ..i'm not sure if it's a direct result of off-field stuff, or if we've got too many players that feel they're playing for their careers (or are still a little shell-shocked after years of on-field abuse).. ..but i fear that some players lack the 'trust' in eachother that all teams require..

Starts at the top.

If you have one of the boys at the top... thats the culture....

The president should not be taking the players out for a drink late at night...... it rubberstamps that behaviour...

Hes no figurehead when it comes to those kinds of things...

Surely there has to be some problems somewhere in the organisation if a plethora of team mates are happy to give quotes to the media about what a marvel, legend and positive influence Judd is, yet don't seem to want to actually emulate him...

We haven't done it hard or worked hard enough to get back to where we are now.

Geelong were 8 million dollars in debt, Frank Costa and Brian Cooke rolled up there sleeves and got there hands dirty and turned that club around.

The Bulldogs found themselves in a dire situation, they've never had the best facilities, the money and had to fight there way out of almost becoming extinct and are fighting there way through and are coming out on top.

The Hawks were almost taken over by Melbourne. The club was in debt, low membership, poor crowds and Ian Dicker and everyone else fort hard for that cubs survival and have turned it around.

When the tough gets going for Carlton we turn to Richard Pratt.

The club's success for over 25 years was bought through Richard Pratt and John Elliot.

I am grateful that Richard helped us out or there may not have been a Carlton football club to support

Geelong were indeed 8 mil in debt, with a shit stadium to boot but they decided to stay put and develop it to AFL standard. We had less debt but Collo at the helm deciding we should leave PP and go to his other stadium. Had we stayed at PP, sunk $ into it we might well have the bouique stadium Melbourne is screaming for.

So now Geelong is on easy street and we are still at the mercy of the stadium bosses.

Essendon* just dropped McVeigh for getting on the soup.
Collingwood put their finals campaign at risk by dropping Dids and Shaw.
We have yet to do anything tough to anybody. Therein lies the difference.

I don't under-estimate the divisive effects on the Club of Fevola's behaviour and Elliott's behaviour. When things are not being done which are seen by many to be obviously needed there is usually politics at work behind the scenes. I'm an observer from afar and am not privy to the inner workings of the Club. As an example on the TV news this evening it's reported that Fevola says he'll be right for Fremantle but there's no mention of it on the Club website. Is this Fevola's PR agent at work independently of the Club? Is he daring the Club to omit him from the team? Is it the same PR machine that organised a two-page spread on Fevola in the Herald-Sun last weekend? We all have strong views on Fevola. The players are not robots and they each would have their own view too. They can't say anything in public and they're treading on eggshells in talking about it amongst their mates. I am uneasy about the Fevola PR machine running in parallel to the Club's. I love what the great man Sir Richard did for Carlton but IMHO the only thing I would question would be his being so matey with Fevola. When he left us a vacuum was created and there appears to be a tectonic shift under way behind the senes.

Fevola was dropped after his performance against Fremantle in 2007.

What good did it do?

All this we're dropping the player to wake him is just bread and circuses for the supporters who love their stars and players.

They can pretend they're doing something, but they'll pick them once their suspension is finished.

Solomon, Fevola, Lovett and McVeigh won't ever change.

Barry Hall had to get out of Melbourne, but is still NQR...

The only way to fix the culture is to sack the player.

And we're not brave enough to do that if presented with an unsatisfactory trade.

Lovett is still at Essendon* for that very reason...

We kept Whitnall after the Dogs and Melbourne showed interest in Lance. :screwy:

Higgins or Birchall...
