Now, don't get me wrong, I don't think we're anywhere near the sort of quality Brisbane were in 2001, but remember that great day in 2001 at Princes Park, where a rampaging Carlton handed Brisbane a footy lesson? We beat the Lions by about 12 goals, which has subsequently been described by Matthews and Voss as the match which hardened the resolve of the Brisbane players to actually do something with their season, and play to the potential that they knew they had. We all know what happened after that.

Is this loss to Essendon* the wake-up call our MC, Coaching staff and players need to extract the digit from the balloon knot, and start taking things a bit more seriously?

We've been beaten this year, but none of those losses has been as meek as the one on Friday night. If that doesn't get some people inside the Club asking some serious questions, then there's something very wrong.

Something positive can come out of the horror show the other night. I'm sure of it.

You'd think the last 7 years would have been the wake up call this club and team needed.

The fact is the players have no confidence in Ratten and are playing exactly like this.

Funny? thing is, the team looked to play with plenty of confidence recently against St Kilda and Brisbane .

Not to mention against Hawthorn, and Collingwood, and Richmond....

I agree KK.
There are some players that have been around for a long time that more often than not get shown up in the tough/intense matches.
Time for some tough decisions to be made.

I reckon you are right on the money KK. Friday night was a defining moment in the club's season and the season's ahead.
They can shrug it off as just ''one of those days'', and coast along picking up a win here and there.
Or they realise that efforts like that should not be tolerated ever again, and attack every game from here on
with a resolve that every contest demands 100% effort, and play with pride in the Carlton guernsey.

The club was embarrassed on Friday, no actually it was humiliated, and the immediate future is a test of where
we are really at.

I expect the Carlton players to hit back and hit back bloody hard, to make other teams PAY!!

My expectation will be the club's DEMAND !!

Maybe.

If all we get is:

In: Garlett
Out: Austin

Expect meltdown on here.

ps:Is there a meeting house for those who seem to have lost faith in their teams abilities, and desire to win it proud for the old dark navy blue?
(forgive me football god for i have sinned  )
Oh..yeah..that's what TC is for.
Hope I get over this sinking feeling v. soon..

tooo many panic merchants, we had a shit game and they'll get over it. had we played well and lost a close one then i'd be pissed. this was just one of them nights as they say.

The lsses we had to have are from about 2 years ago.

Each game now is a game you have to win...

i like the way you think KK. silver lining and all that. only time will tell if this game was a watershed moment for us. my worry is that we've failed in all our "line in the sand" type games so far. we dont seem to have the capacity to get over the line when there is so much expectation on us. how do we develop mental toughness??

We have had enough losses that they had to have over the recent years
What they need more than anything is the win they have to have
We need game against a quality side where we grind them into the dirt
these sides that have the wood on us we need to really smack one
then they will take the next step until then we are trading water

Essendon* did to us what we did to Richmond round 1 and look where Richmond are at.

After a demoralising and embarrassing loss the test is to see if we are mentally strong enough to put it behind us and move forward. If we go down against Freo it could really derail the rest of our campaign

Exactly my point, Melvey.

I believe our list is better than Richmond's, and Essendon*'s even, just a little "mercurial" mentally.

We had a couple of close losses - Hawthorn, St Kilda - which made us, and possibly the players, think that but for a few fluffed kicks we're right up there. This thumping loss should really give an indication that talent has to matched with application if results are to be achieved.

The next week or two will really show whether this loss has damaged the psyche of the team, or whether Judd and Ratten, together with the senior players, can use the loss for something positive long-term. We're in it for the marathon, not the sprint.

I would have hoped that we had a few of those over the last few years. Hell, I thought the Freo game on the Gold Coast would have spurred us on, but alas I guess this proves I am no sports psych. I'm hoping this loss is some kind of catalyst for the coaches and players as I'm struggling to think of anything else positive to come out of this weekend.

I think tactically we have major issues so Im not sure a 69 pt belting from Essendon* serves any great purpose in my opinion.

I'm usually someone who likes to see the silver lining but I'm afraid not this time. We had 2 weeks to be ready for this game. We knew what was at stake and surrended meekly. Disgraceful performance that all involved should be ashamed of.

I thought the Adelaide game was our low point and we'd never go back there again. Even the Freo game. Yet here we are

I'll be at Subi this week. I won't be held responsible for my actions if they dish up another performance like Friday night. Seriously...
