They're a breed apart at Punt Road. I suppose you have to look for silver linings if you support Richmond (and they're more likely to be found in the past than in the present), but one of the ferals cheers himself up with the alleged factoid that Carlton has played the Tigers in the finals 22 times, and Carlton has won only 4 of them with one being a draw. Is he right? I remember the last occasion we played in a final, they won (in the SF of 2000 or 2001?) after Kouta did his knee in the 3Q or so. But we had 2 pretty important wins against them in 1972 and 1982 ![]() Whether it's true or not, it provides an interesting insight into the Tiger fans' feelings towards Carlton. They remind me of younger brothers who are trying to compete against their big brothers to win respect and attention, while the older brothers consider them too insignificant to worry about. Having said that, the Tigers always seemed to fire up in the 90s when they were out of the finals race and they had the chance to hurt our finals chances. Interesting comments too from Terry Wallace. He suggested that in his 2 stints at Richmond, there has never been a time when everyone at the club pulled together for the sake of the club. He says that there have always been those who are more interested in building and maintaining a power base. No doubt he's the world's greatest salesman and perhaps he should focus more on his own shortcomings, but his comment does tend to conform to an outsider's impression that they eat their own. |

I dont know the specific details Mav but I know that what we are to Collingwood in finals, Richmond is to us. We're 5-1 over the Pies in GF's and I think Richmond has beaten us in 4 GF's: http://www.blueseum.org/tiki-index.php?page=Runners+Up Whatever the result is, they've had it over us except for the past 30 years where they truly have been a rabble. My favourite point (ran out on many occasions) is that Richmond and Carlton both havent played finals since 2001. We're the only Clubs in the comp with this point. Yet everyone knows of Carlton's problem - massive mismanagement, draft penalties, shocking draft selections and constant board ructions. And what's Richmond's story? They're just rubbish! |

jokes aside Richmond's problem has been recruiting. "Almighty" Greg Miller started the rot by trading top picks for good-not-great-or-flashy players (pick 4/2 for Kane Johnson, pick 6 for Nathan Brown) Then they brought in a lot of chaff players from other clubs (Mark Graham, McMahon etc) either swapping picks or stifling development Then they recruited badly - several draft picks amounting to nothing - Oakley-Nicholls being the best examples, and Meyer. Then they developed badly - many good picks have become ok players but none - except maybe Foley - have developed into top-flight players. DeLedio has been ok at best, certainly no matchwinner. Tamstrings has been woeful but may be turning the corner a bit. Pattison has had injuries but doesn't have a position (in that key development time he had to play in the ruck because they didn't have anyone else to play there - instead of set himself for CHF or FF) Their list is shithouse for all these reasons. Definitely Wallet is responsible for the last one...... and maybe the second one. But the recruitment and the early trades for "big" players were a failure set in place before he arrived. I think now finally they realise that the quick fix isnt going to work and they're going to cut deeply, probably pick a young coach and go from there. |

Deledio wasn't as 'guaranteed' as Gibbs or Murphy, and neither was Tambling. Deledio was a good kid, with great physical upside. I don't blame them for going Deledio at #1, but maybe they could have rolled the dice with Buddy at #4. Oh well, it's done and done now, they have to live with it. |

You might be right in terms of quality in the pool but I recall (correct me if I'm wrong) that DeLedio was pretty strong at number 1 with only a few clubs preferring someone else. I know the Bulldogs are on the record saying they would have picked Griffen.... but I doubt Hawthorn would have picked Roughhead if they had pick 1.....? |

I can only go from the championship but he looked the most impressive player... better than Roughead... Franklin looked shit... Griffen was injured from memory and played in the forward pocket.... I didn't see Tambling but I remember many punters (like Synbad) raving about him So besides the 2 talls its been a pretty crap top 10. Williams has been ok but struggles to get on the park. Lewis has been excellent. Meeson crap and Russell.... well... he's Russell... and Chris Egan. nuff said |

IIRC the Dogs and Lions had Griffen at #1. Griffen played in the Championships and burst out of the centre square quite often. Don't recall Roughead showing a lot...was often triple teamed when he played forward. And yeh Buddy did nothing. |

Tyrant, keep going on that draft. I reckon there is only one very good player between Lewis and Pick 35 (Van Berlo).
